Steve thanks for the offer. I do appreciate it. All others thank you I've considered all help.

So here's what I did, I bought a new power supply. Upgraded from a 250 to 450 BFG. Sweet by the way, and very cool insulated cables.

Took out the old stock Gateway power supply and installed new unit, with a little physical effort the new power supply. Hooked everything up and turned it on. Nothing, no nothin.

So I unhooked all peripherals, and only hooked up the 20 pin and 4 pin connectors to the mother board. Then tried to start up the unit. Nothing. I then started trying different combinations. I am having a confidence issue with the four pin from the power supply. It doesn't seem to be exactly like the old one. Some of the connectors look square some look rounded. Not in the same combo as the old power unit. I tried several rotations of the four pin connection to see if that made a difference. Nothing did.

I unplugged the four pin and tried to turn it on. Nothing else was attached other than the power cord and the 20 pin. Caught a quick shot of power then died. Tried again and eventually got the power unit to turn on. Noticed by the fan being on. I replicated this several times and fan from the power unit stayed on. Plugged in the hard drive, and couldn't get it to boot.

My guess at this point is I have a bad, or inconsistent on/off switch and also an incompatible four pin from the power source to the mother board.

Damn, this is getting deeper than I wanted it to. Am I looking at a mother board and a new cabinet, with consistent on/off switch? Heck it now is looking like a full up grade.

I just re-read Steve's comments. If I could get the four pin to work or handle a work around, it may give the rest of the MOBO the power needed to rock n roll.

Spend another $100 on it and including the price of your labor and patience and you might as well pick up a whole new PC from Costco! :rolleyes3:

I hope you get it working!

Is the processor based on an AMD 64 bit system? They require the extra power provided by the four connectors to boot.

Depending on the age of the motherboard, it may be that one of the Capacitors "died." There was a bad bunch of caps that really plagued systems a few years ago. If you cannot get the power supply to work, it might be faster to just buy a new system and transfer data off the drives.
