    Hi all,

Wanted to share 3 of the fabulous activities that are taking place at the EarthDay@Loudoun 2009 event.

For those that missed the fall rainbarrel workshop, the Loudoun Soil & Water Conservation District will be holding 2 Rainbarrel Workshops. You will make them and take them home with you that day. They will deliver the barrels to your car in the parking lot so no worries about dragging it around the event. It just got warm enough for me to install my 2 rainbarrels last week and they already have water in it!

The Master Gardeners of Loudoun County are having 2 workshops on creating an herb or a salsa garden in eco-friendly containers. This is a hands-on workshop and you will be able to take the finished product home.

The Farmer's Market is coming early to Broadlands. Catch your favorite Farmer's for fresh meat, eggs, early vegetables, plants and honey.

These are 3 of the 70+ exhibitors that will be at the Earth Day event. Get there early because there is a lot to see and do. There will be live music in the parking lot of Clyde's along with BBQ available. WINC 92.5 FM will be broadcasting live. Leesburg Animal Park is bringing their animals for a petting zoo. Reptiles Alive!, the National Aquarium and the Raptor Conservancy will all be having shows.

    Rain or shine

This free event is brought to you by Broadlands very own Wildlife Habitat Committee.

    Yay, another rainbarrel event!
Thank you for the heads-up. I wish I had mine before the recent rainfall so they'd be full by now but couldn't make the fall event. Glad they decided to have another!

Is there a cost involved with the rainbarrels this time, like there was for the fall event? I just want to make sure I have cash on hand if it's required.

    Thank you

The rain barrels are $50 each. Mine are full now that it's rained so much. They were really easy to install.

    See you at the event!

Thanks Maureen -- until I have approvals I'll just hold on to it.
The next mods meeting is May 5, right? What's the deadline for applications to make that meeting? Thank you

So forgive me for pointing out the obvious, but shouldn't the HOA just go ahead and make it acceptable for residents to use rain barrels if they meet certain criteria? Especially with the whole eco push and all? Sounds like a lot of extra paperwork and hassle for no good reason...

Per our governing documents, exterior modifications of any type must be approved by the Modifications Subcommittee prior to construction or installation. Governing docs cannot be easily changed - it's like changing the Constitution on a neighborhood scale.

That's just absurd! Making people jump through hoops to make their homes more eco friendly is just not cool. And comparing the HOA docs to the constitution?!! :bs:

The State of VA makes the rules Bdlander...and the Declaration and Bylaws are what spells out how the Association will be governed just like a country's constitution does. There are no hoops to jump through to get a rain barrel approved, fill out an application send a couple of photos...I'm here to help people through this process and to answer questions about the community, tossing insulting remarks at me and BS emoticons, that is not cool!

    Wow. Uh.
I've filled out one of these mod apps before. They're really... nothing. (Never submitted it, though, changed my mind on making the mod.)

I don't have to be at the May 6 meeting, correct? Just have to have the form in by then?

You do not have to be at the meeting. Take a look at the guidelines
http://www.broadlandshoa.org/filesh...s+HOA+Design+Guidelines/036a_Rain_Barrels.pdf for Submission Requirements and you should be all set.

Don't know if I'm hijacking but...

I just wanted to thank those of you associated w/the Broadlands Wildlife Committee who helped with the EarthDay@Loudoun 2009 Family Festival. What a wonderful event. Our family had a great time and we learned quite a bit. I don't live in Broadlands but am very grateful to those of you who work to help all of us. You are gems in this community.

    Thanks.
