I have had my 5 year old enrolled at Winwood Reston since they opened 2 years ago. In that time I have had no problems at all. In fact, when I suggested that they put in parking lot wheel stops to keep parents from driving across the parking lot, they did. The senior administrator there is Ms. Audrey. She is attentive, intelligent, responsive, and friendly. She lives in Ashburn and based in part upon her recommendation of the area, I moved to out there from Herndon. My 9 year old went to Winwood day camp last year and had a great summer. He went on to attend after school last year and has the same great teacher there this summer. They have/had private Internet-accessible cameras in each room but the service doesn't work well and you forget about it after the novelty has worn off.
Needless to say the waiting list is long.

I have the exactly the same concerns as Concerned_Mom. I pulled out my son last week because I think this is the worst day care. I also have the same comments about the director.

One more thing, when I used to drop of my son in the morning one of the teachers smelled like she just had a couple of cigarettes, I can't remember what her name was. I wouldn't be suprised when she takes that kids out to the backyard playground that she takes the opportunity to smoke as well (note: she probably smoked before coming to work and doesnt smoke while at the daycare). We all know what second hand smoke as well as nicotine residues on hair, clothing, skin can do to young kids.

Thanks for your continued input. The concerns and problems you express are very serious. I have forwarded the website address to Children's World so the upper management can take a close look at what the parents are seeing and thinking about the care of their children. I am also a parent as well as a teacher.
I expect to hear further on this issue this afternoon and you can all be assured, whether you recommend this center or not, whether your child or someone else's child is at this center...some of us who teach and care for your children care very much about their day. Every day.

What room was your child in? Can you please notify Childrens World District person and the state? The more parents that complain, maybe something will be done. Have you found a new place for your son? I am currently looking and have been at home all week with my daughter.

He was in the toddler room as well. We decided to move him to a child care provider who works out from her home. At least, I know now that my son will get more attention as she only takes care of 3 other children. It might be to early to say, but so far so good. Unfortunately, she will only take up a maximum of 4 kids - so good luck on your search. Found her on one of the local county papers.

About complaining, I already did but it proved to be a waste of my time. To think that Children's world is a subsidiary of a respectable company, Aramark, they would provide better quality day care.

I had my daughter in Minnieland when we first moved to Ashburn from July 2001 to September 2001. I had already planned on putting her at my work's daycare, but it hadn't opened yet, so I had to find a place. I looked at Ashburn Country Day (which now is owned by Minnieland too) and Ashburn Children's Center and Minnieland. I liked Minnieland best. It was brand new then so it was very nice -- I haven't been back so can't comment. We loved it so much it was hard to decide to go ahead and use my work's daycare (even though we had a deposit down). We did and are happy, but if I were to leave my job I'm sure I'd consider returning to Minnieland again.

Just curious, how much do parents spend a week or month on child care? Is it for the whole day (10hrs)? 5 days a week? My estimate would be $10/hr x 10hrs/day x 5 days = $500/week. Am I close?

If it were that much none of us could afford it! Most private (4 kids approx - out of provider's home is &160-$200 weekly) corporations like Minnieland, Winwood, Open Arms, etc... $200-$300 a week.

Well at Children's World I paid for part-time care and it cost me $107 for three half days. The full-time cost for the 2 year old room is around $190.I believe its $220 for the infant room. Average in Northern Virginia is $160 to $240 I believe for both home care and public daycare.

I am glad to hear great things about Minnieland. The toddler room teacher from Children's World is now working there and she was wonderful. Which Minnieland in Ashburn did your child attend?

FYI to everyone, there is a State Licensed home daycare that has available FULL TIME ONLY spots. Here is her information:

    O'Connor, Theresa
    Angel Hearts Family Child Care
    (Ashburn Village)
    Ashburn, VA 20147
    (703) 723-7075

Does anyone know of a good home provider who has openings for an under 2 year old? Only problem is, it wouldn't be for set hours. More like a few hours here, a few hours there kinda thing. What I remember from previous research is many providers (private or public) need a set schedule when your child will be attending.

    Thanks

Sorry about that. Didn't realize they had actually changed the names on the ones they bought. It was the Minnieland in Ashbriar.

Well it is Monday and I have not heard from Children's World District contact - Kristin (sp?). I guess it was a waste of my time.

I just received a call from the State about their investigation at Children's World Broadlands. He found many things:

    1. Infant room - cleaning chemical bottles hanging on doors
    - not enough space between cribs.
    2. Two year old room - cleaning chemicals within reach of kids
    (hanging on door)
    - Teacher Ratio
    - Teacher does not qualify to be in room
(this is the teacher I stated does not speak
    english)
    - Kids running around with cups in hands
    3. Four Year old room - Teacher Ratio(1 teacher with many kids)
    4. Older Room - Found 3 year olds with 8 and 10 year olds.

Kristen Scott from Children's World just contacted me as well. She listened to everything I had to say. She asked me to provide this number to any parent who has or is currently having issues with Children;s world.

It may not be convenient for many parents in Ashburn but Reston Children's Center off South Lakes Dr. is wonderful. I work in Reston and my son rides with me daily. I have to switch him to another center for afterschool care once he starts kindergarten. Does anyone have a recommedation for a local place that buses from Hillside Elem?

Has anyone contacted Kristen Scott with Children's World? I went into Children's World last week to pick up my daughters things and again the Staff Ratio was wrong in the two year old room. What will it take for this place to follow the law? I guess the State finding violations isn't enough.

Just spoke with two teachers today and was informed that Kristen will be meeting with Children's World Director tomorrow, July 31st arriving at 9:30 AM. I tried calling her today but the phone just kept ringing no voicemail available to leave a message. My son is in the two year old room and also not very happy. In addition, another good teacher will be leaving CWLC due to the Director.

Kristen should be removing the director not coming to meet with her. All the good teachers have left or are going to leave. My concern is for the parents that are not aware of what happens there and also the kids that are still at the center daily.
There is no reason in this world that would make me leave my child there. Even though my daughter is no longer there I will not stop until the director is removed and new staff is brought in. Kristen has enough information to remove the director and that is what MUST be done to help this center.
