    Hi,

I am looking for someone to make customer draperies for some of the windows in my home.

Does anyone have someone that they've used before that is reasonably priced and does good work? I've never had custom draperies made, and I've received one estimate, which I think is outrageously expensive, but I have nothing else to compare it to, so I don't know if it's actually reasonable or wildly overpriced.

    Any assistance suggestions are appreciated!

PS - If there's anyone out there that lives in the Ashwood model with the two story family room, and you've had window treatments made for your family room, I've love to take a look! I am at somewhat of a loss for what to do with these windows ... They have wood blinds in them already, but I'm looking for a fabric treatment to go with this. The one company who has given me an estimate is telling me that I should have one treatment that covers both the upper and lower windows.

    Thanks for your help!

Try calling Kelly Cooper. She lives in Overland Park and makes
custom drapes out of her house. If you want to see samples of her
work, she made all the drapes in her house.

    Her number is 703-858-7615

Or try calling Jessica Needham off Hunter Green Square at 703-858-3666. She makes custom drapes and cornices out of her house too.

I think I have the same model as you and also am having trouble figuring out what to do. The prior owners have wood blinds on the lower windows but nothing on the upper windows. I had been looking into wood blinds that could raise up/down with remote but didn't find anything.

I also have been considering the full length drapes but not sure how that would look.

Would love to hear suggestions from others with the 2-story family room.

Thanks! I will give both Jessica and Kelly a call!

    Lisa,
I've found a couple pictures in a magazine of windows with floor to ceiling drapes - it does look really nice, but all that material certainly increases the price. I too have faux wood blinds at the bottom, and nothing (except Vista UV coverings) at the top. I wanted operational drapes to help cut down on the evening drafts from the windows in the winter, but that can be opened to let in the sun during the day.

I did some Internet searching - in this link there's a Q&A and there's 2 questions (one at the very top and another near the bottom) from a woman who lives in Ashburn, with a 2 story family room who was facing the same dilemma that we are (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/liveonline/03/regular/home/r_home_staff061203.htm). The author recommends the floor to ceiling curtains, calling it "cheap" to just cover the lower windows...

Here's some more images I found with examples:

    Peppermint,

We don't have an Ashwood model but do have 2 story family room windows. There are fabric drapes that go floor to ceiling surrounding the windows and Hunter Douglas Silouette Blinds covering them. You are welcome to look - email me if you are interested.

I used Value Blind Heirloom Draperies (703 406 2303) and worked exclusively with Nancy. First I did my own research on what kind of window treatments I wanted such as shape, style, fabric and texture. I made my own sketches as I had lived in the Middle East region and really liked some of the window treatment styles from there and then Nancy brought various samples of fabrics over so I could compare what I wanted. It was not cheap but I am very very pleased with the results. If you are interested, send me an email and you can come see them or I can give you more info.

Another thing which I did since these homes (I'm in a Spruce model) have so many windows, that for a few of my rooms, I converted some long antique shawls into window treatments as well.

    Good luck and have fun!

sorry...I forgot to mention in my earlier post that I also have the two story family room. First I also have the Hunter Douglas Silhoutte blinds on all windows and with remote control for the upper windows. Then I have the other curtains made in a design similar to what you'd find in some of the palaces of the Middle East region with ceiling to floor curtains and pulled back with tie backs. I'm not sure how to accurately describe the rest so just email me if you're interested!

Carol, I am impressed with your creativity with use of those lovely scarves and such. I bet your home is beautiful :) I bet the long palace style drapes look lovely too.

When we bought this home, it was 18 months old and all the windows had some sort of blinds. Some are okay, some I do not like.
We had some heavy drapes on the windows and dark window treatments... I removed them all (yuck) and now I just cant figure out what I want. We had the full floor to ceiling drapes, dark, with icky fringe in the family room and well, it was a lot to dust. It made the family room look like a funeral home, to be honest.
I do like those silhouette blinds......

Hi Sk8r! I tried to send you a private email but it bounced back! I believe we are not too far from each other so just email me if you'd like to pop by and see them...you can meet the infamous Tripod too! [8D]

Our home's taste would not be for everyone. Since we've spent most of our time overseas just about everything inside our home including furniture, is from our travels. When my husband's tour of duty ends here we hope to rent out our home partially furnished and I hope that won't be too difficult a procedure to do!
