Does anyone know if you're allowed to build a deck with stairs? We're in Southern Walk in a two-car townhouse and there's not much room back there.

Plus, anyone ever used spiral staircases? If so, how were they & where'd you find them? Getting a deck built is expensive enough and adding stairs doubles (that's right, doubles) the price. I was thinking spiral ones were cheaper and would take up less space.

    Thanks!

I have one on my townhouse but I'm not in SouthernWalk. HOA has different rules for different sections. It's best to talk with them about the rules. I've seen spirl staircases on decks and they do save a lot of space. I'm not sure about price. Everyone loves my staircase. In my case the staircase was just under 50% the cost of the deck but I got trex which adds even more. Only problem I see with a spirl is tall people might have a problem and if you're carrying anything it might be difficult to navigate the turns.

We've got a spiral staircase. It's from the Iron Shop (www.theironshop.com). About $2000 plus shipping, but for what it saves in yard space it's great (and stairs aren't cheap on a deck, either). I don't know if we'd have done it if we had small childeren, but we did buy the gate option for the top. I haven't had any problem going up or down with a plate for the grill, but My husband has sacrificed one dinner plate to that endeavor.
