If you're talking by the Home Depot, that's Ryan's Corners and they're starting off with a new Wacovia Bank, with a strip mall to follow. On the other side of the Greenway is an area in Broadlands which will be a commercial area with a Harris Teeter grocery as an anchor store.

I don't know how grocery stores make it in this area. The Safeway is barely crowded, the Giant down the street is a little more crowded but not much. Wegman's has been open a year now and is still consistently packed - and cheaper.

I remember someone posted a while back about checking the expiration dates at items bought Safeway and Giant and it's true. There is a significant difference in the quality of produce when comparing Safeway/Giant to Wegmans.

And now we're adding a Harris Teeter and another Giant. How will they all survive?

(getting off my soapbox and going back to hunting for eggs ;)

No, I am referring to the southeast corner on the other side of the Greenway. THere is a small plot of land tucked in there that is being constructed on. I doubt it is anything residential, but could be wrong.

The national standards for grocery stores is that it takes about 2000 rooftops to support one grocery store. Based on that Broadlands alone should support the two we have.
We pretty much stick with Safeway for grocery shopping and have yet to experience a problem with expiration dates.

Well ... according to the map as shown on the URL, the SouthEast corner is actually where the apartments currently are.

If you use the Home Depot as the south anchor, the new wachovia is on the southwest corner, the apartments on the southeast, townhouses on the northeast, and open land on the northwest. I suspect the northwest area is what you're talking about, and that (I believe) is supposed to be townhouses.

Woo Hoo, from the look of the plan, it looks like we are going to get an Applebees there.

I also noticed in that plan, an Applebee's, Gold's Gym and another Exxon in 2006.

Did you notice the safe they built for the bank? Looks like a foot of concrete all the way around. I thought it was interesting because I drive by it every day and it is interesting how they construct the safe first.

We had not had problems with safeway until the other day, we bought salsa, and were putting it in sauce and noticed hairy looking chunks coming out. Ruined about $30 in ingridents and it was full of mold - YUCK! We will be taking it back, we saved it :(

They had a special on strawberries last week, 2 for $3.99 but they were ALL moldy. I was able to find some semi-decent looking ones but I really really had to dig. Perhaps we need to revisit the Safeway message board, they were reading it for a while.

Since this has turned into a Safeway thread: I got something in the mail the other day stating that the Harris Teeter over in Ashbrook (Ashburn Village Blvd & Route 7) was opening in May. That will be a good preview of what we can expect of the one planned for Broadlands!

I thought Harris Teeter was going in Brambleton development. Oh - also - be careful if you buy skim milk at Safeway - three times I bought skim milk - and guess what? It was whole milk in a skim milk bottle. I returned it all three times.

They are building three Harris Teeters in Ashburn: One in Ashbrook, one in Broadlands and one in Brambleton. They are making a huge push in Northern Virginia to capture the market.
