I live on Bramblebush and when walking our dog (or just taking walks in general), I get discusted at the amount of "land mines" I find. I don't dare go out into the grass field anymore. I've had too many messes on my shoes! We always carry "poop bags" with us. It amazes me that people are so discusting and disrespectful in their own neighborhood. If you can't clean up after your dogs, you don't deserve to own them!

Did anyone catch tonight's ending story on the 6pm edition of channel 4 news? Seems as if a would-be robber took the wrong bag out of a woman's hands while she was out walking her dog...you got it...he opened it up and had a nice surprise -- NOT.

Then to add further salt to the wound he returned the next day as the woman was walking her dog with a gun to shoot the dog. Although he tried twice to shoot the dog, the gun malfunctioned.

Sounds like fair justice to me... :D

My old neighborhood (Cameron Station) had signs posted everyehere. In certain pokcet parks they had signs that said "No Dogs Allowed" and everywhere else they had signs about Alexandria's leash and pick up laws. I think that helped out alot...and they were very good about sending notices. Having 3 dogs myself I find it hard to believe that as dog owner you don't know what you should and shouldn't do.

perhaps we should have designated doog pooping grounds... in the woods would seem fine to me... that way the trees get some fertilizer and the poops not near the sidewalks/common areas =)

Actually ... too much waste would cause other problems (smell) ... and actually cause trees to die due to eventual toxicity of the soil due to over fertilization.

Not to mention that the uncaring dog owners would not want to step in the stuff they left twelve hours before, so they'd find a clean area where they can walk with their dog unobstructed.

What do people say if a proposal was made to charge a graduation series of fines if caught ??

plus dogs poop when the mood strikes and usually have their favorite spots. Its hard to get them to poop on command in a specific area.

I don't agree with that at all. You can train a dog to use a certain space.

Actually I've known people who do. But you have to take the dog to that spot for several months; and obviously, the folks we're talking about don't have the discipline or inclination to train their dogs.

I support such a proposal. I do a lot of work from home and my home office looks out over the walking trail in Southern Walk. I see many dog owners not picking up behind their dogs as well as some dog owners allowing their dogs to do their business in the backyards of some homes along the trail. However my question would be how would such a proposal be enforced? In addition to catching a dog owner in the act of not picking up after their dog one would obviously have to obtain their identity.

That's the sticking point ... but having something like that on the books, may create a deterrant.

However, I think what is needed initially is a series of public education notices in the newsletter about the necessity of cleaning up after your pet. If this doesn't work, then things may need to go forward with some sort of punitive measure.

Well ... the homeowners could put one of those motion sensor water guns they sell to squirt deer in their yard, and add a siphon that would suck up some indelible ink !! [}:)]

During a discussion last night with some wonderful Broadlands residents who I learned are lurkers here (come on...speak out...you know who you are! :D ) A suggestion was made to set up a web cam looking out at segments of the walking trail. Nice concept although we all realized that it would be less than practical.

I think Neil's suggestion of a series of educational articles would be a start...maybe some notices could be posted at various points along the trail?

I'm at the Southern Walk point of the trail where I can see many folks coming from the Southern Walk apartments to walk their dogs along the trail. I think most of the violators are from the apartments less than the SFH dog owners here. Would someone from the HOA want to speak with the management of the apartment, maybe circulating a flyer in the mailboxes over there?

On this same topic, what is the process for ensuring that the poopie bag stations stay stocked?? We leave the house with a bunch of bags, but sometimes our little guy still surprises us while out on our walks. Today, we stopped by four different stations to find them all empty. Although it is not the neighborhood's responsibility to provide bags for this purpose, it certainly can't hurt to have these things stocked.

wow, I've never ran into one of them that was not stocked. That's odd.

We have one part-time person working for the HOA, who's job it is to walk the trails and keep the bag stations stocked. As it is, she can't keep up and access every area on a daily basis. Then again, if it was actually dog owners using the stations, we probably wouldn't have this thread.

Hopefully, it is responsible dog owners using the stations, however, if you see someone accessing the station and pulling out bags with no dog in sight, I would give them 'what for'.

Please give the HOA office a call, and let them know the location of the stations that need refills.

Some areas of Broadlands might be more in need of dog bag stations, than other areas. Make a formal request to our HOA manager at wschroeder@broadlandshoa.com to request that a dog bag/trash station be installed or moved, if it's needed at a particular junction that would be more convenient and helpful to dog owners.

To re-emphasize a previous point, please call the HOA office to let them know of the location of the stations that need refills. If it's a weekday, the stations can be refilled within the hour. Those of us who have dogs, please spread the word among other dog-owners, too.

Every little bit helps. Dog owners are in a unique position to be able to persuade other dog owners to be considerate.

Last, but not least, Wes would like to hear from residents on any solutions or ideas to resolve these problems, so be sure to let him know, too.

Is it too hard for dog owners to carry their own baggies? Why should the HOA have to provide supplies for someone else's pet. My cat needs kitty litter... I buy that myself. =)
