What areas are being considered? How are things coming along? When do you think a dog park might become a reality here?

I am so glad to run across this post. I have real little dogs but they would love to run around. All my neighbors do is complain about my dogs so something like this would be a nice relief.

Not to "totally" hi-jack this resurrection but I read the following about dog activites and really thought it was cool.

Ask the Vet: Involving your pet in community activities
    By: Michael Strickland

Q: I own a 3-year-old golden retriever named Abby, who has a wonderful temperament and adores meeting new people. Abby is well trained and obedient. I've been thinking about how good Abby is and was wondering how we could get involved in the community. Do you have any suggestions?

[IMG] A: It sounds like Abby is truly delightful, and I appreciate your interest in community involvement. I can think of two local programs that might interest you.

The first is called Fairfax Pets on Wheels. This is an all-volunteer organization that takes pets into nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. A lot of residents in these facilities are quite lonely and can suffer from depression. Visits with pets and their owners help draw these people out of their shells and help improve their quality of life.

The human/animal bond is very strong and has been clinically proven to help decrease stress. In turn, you'll get to spend more time with Abby and will have the chance to learn from people from many walks of life.

Even if you and your pet are unable to volunteer with an organization such as this, you can always offer support in other ways. Fairfax Pets on Wheels sponsors a 3K walk every year called Paws for a Cause that takes place in Fairfax. This walk for people and their pets is a lot of fun. This year, it will be on Oct. 1 at noon. If you are interested, check out the Web site at www.fpow.org .

Another way to help other animals in your community is to have Abby be a blood donor. An organization called the Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank serves the surrounding area. To be a blood donor, your dog must weigh at least 35 pounds and be between 9 months and 7-1/2 years of age.

Each donation takes about 10 to 20 minutes, and one donation can help save up to four lives. My own dog is a blood donor, and I find it an extremely rewarding experience. She really enjoys going each time because she gets so many treats.

If you are interested in pursuing this, check out the blood bank's Web site at http://www.evbb.com . You will find detailed criteria for the donors and contact information for how to get involved.

As you can see, there are a variety of ways that you and your pet can help out in the community. I encourage you to participate in existing organizations or maybe even create one of your own. The possibilities are endless.

The author is a veterinarian with Leesburg Veterinary Hospital.

A response I got from LC PRCS:
    Brian,
There has been discussion about Outlands putting one in and possibly partnering with the town and County, and they have asked we maintain it. I do not have the staff resources at this time to do that. I am very supportive of the concept but could not maintain such a facility without additional resources. You may want to check with Outlands or Kaj Dentler at Leesburg Parks and Recreation (Director of Town of Leesburg Parks and Recreation which includes Ida Lees Park) to see if they are continuing to pursue that option. We are looking into putting one at Lovettsville Park in future years but again there is no funding identified at this time.

Sometime back there were statements made by PRCS that they were seriously looking at putting in a dog park, either at Ida Lee or somewhere south of town I believe. Did anything ever come of that? How about some of the newer parks being built - what about putting in dog parks there too? Someplace to let the dogs run free would be great and a welcome amenity to the residents of LC
