Or you could keep your dog to your own property or common areas.

Why is it someone else's burden your dog needs exercise?

I need exercise too.. should I come run around on your deck for an hour.. or maybe just dig up all your grass. I need the exercise you know.

You must not be a dog lover....all dogs need exercise, as well as people.

So, for arguments sake, let's say some teenagers constantly jump your fence and cut through your yard, through your flower beds or garden damaging plants and whatnot. Is that okay with you? Teenagers need exercise too. :)

teens cut thru our yard all the time before we got a fence (for the DOG to stay in NOT for the teens to stay out. :) )

as long as they didn't vandalize our property or leave litter behind we didn't care. and no i don't consider urine piddle from a dog vandalizing property but poop left behind IS akin to litter. :)

our lives must be SPECTACULAR if we can dedicate THIS LEVEL of kvetching to doggie piddle on the strip of grass beside the sidewalk... it's GREAT to be a Broadlander!!!!

I never said they didn't. However, what you and your dog need doesn't make my property your property. That's the crux of the point - just because you need something doesn't make your needs supercede that of other's rights.

I don't care what you do for your exercise, or that of your dogs. You can get that exercise in all kinds of places. I could care less where you go as long as you respect the wishes of the people's property you are on/around.

The fact your dog needs to pee does not give you any more right to ignore a property owner's wishes then it does for me to come over and pee on your front doorstep. There is simply no justification for it what so ever. If YOUR dog needs to goto the bathroom its YOUR job to facilitate that - not anyone else's responsibility or debt.

And that is your right to allow people to cross or do that if you wish - but on the flip side YOUR choice does not supercede that of others who may chose otherwise.

My choice of freedoms does not dictate what you must do.

This conversation isn't about dog pee as much as it is about lack of respect for other people's rights or wishes.

We are the proud "owners" of two dogs. We walk around Broadlands - a great joy! We only let the dogs do their thing on common areas. It is rude to do this on someone's property. The HOA provided Mutt Mitts are great. Most dog walkers seem respectful.

Why can't people put up a sign so we know whose property is off limits? If there is a sign on the grassy strip between the sidewalk and the street in front of someone's house, next to the fire hydrant perhaps depending on the house, then we will gladly walk in the road to bypass this one. I really thought we were being considerate and careful.

Seriously, look at where the fire hydrants are located. Does the home owner own the fire hydrant? Dogs cannot go there? Really? I didn't know we were such bad neighbors. We are obviously so much worse than those people who never pick up the poop - you know, the ones who look at you and just walk away. I always give them dirty looks, but I guess I won't anymore since we are just as bad for letting our dog use a fire hydrant. Wow, just wow.

I think signs are more hated then the poop...

It's not about peeing on a hydrant or not - its about if the owner comes out and asks you not to let your dog pee in their yard - and the owner gets belligerent with them and act like it's your dogs god given right to pee in THEIR yard as described by KTDid.

Signs need to be approved also.

then that particular dog owner sounds like a jerk. it's NORMAL for a dog to pee on grass, but if a home owner minds and asks you not to allow it, then you should respect the request, whether you find it reasonable or not. there are plenty of people who don't mind, plenty of place for my dog to still whizz.

if someone said to me "excuse me- would you mind not letting your dog pee on my lawn?" I'd say- "no problem" and make sure he doesn't pee there. but if the person said "HEY. you are infringing on my inalienable rights as a property owner by allowing your mutt to piss on my grass and I am SICK OF IT!" then after i gave them an incredulous "really?" look, and rolling my eyes, I would not let my dog pee there anymore. NOT SAYING THAT'S WHAT KTDID DID, just saying that the way the request came at me would definitely impact my initial reaction. either way my dog would no longer tinkle there- it's just not a battle worth fighting.

i would even keep him off of the strip of grass in front of their house since they are likely sitting at the window, peeking out, waiting and watching for whizzing weimereiners and pissing poodles looking to defile their grass. they might even have a squirt gun trained on unsuspecting dog walkers, and will spray them down much like their downtrodden urine soaked grass.

    FIGHT THE POWER. :minister:

And that's all people are really asking for - instead of being told 'well a dog has got to pee'... 'a dog needs exercise' which is the response people got here.

Technically, the "grass strip" between the sidewalk and the street is owned by the county and jurisdiction is given to VDOT via an easement.
No homeowner owns this strip, so no homeowner has the authority to tell anyone else what can, or cannot, be done on the strip.
Just thought I'd point that out to keep the debate lively...................

Cliff rocks!!! Fire hydrant is back in play. Thanks.

I don't like being called rude and lazy, when I think we are really very careful and considerate. I have seen the "please don't let your dog go on our lawn" type signs and we don't even let our dog WALK on those lawns (just in case). So, obviously, if a homeowner asked us not to stop anywhere near their property, we wouldn't.

Fire hydrants are ok... boy, am I relieved (pun intended).

But then you have to live with the result.
