You're kidding, right? I have almost the same rig and it rocks and will rock for years to come. It will be able to handle Doom III and Half Life 2.

My only concern is the graphics card. Not sure how smooth it'll be at 1280x1024x32bit w/ FSAA on. :(

I have to say, it's pretty smooth at those settings with UT2k4.

I think it will be fine. I have the same card. I abuse it and it worls great. If Doom III needs anyhting higher than the 9700 we're in trouble b/c the 9800 is (or is the next to last) card in this current generation of graphic cards. The next gen will require us all to get new motherboards.

    Bring on PCI-Express!

The new ATI X800 series is still AGP based, but they're in the $500 range for the XT version.

I have the 9700 XT...I would have thought the X800's would have puched the price of the 9800 XT down but it doesn't look like it. :(

Not going to buy a $500 video card with next gen around the corner. I'm not sure you'd get all that much more performance out of it versus money spent. Now if it were $80-$100. Sure. Actually when next gen comes out those will be affordable!

I gave up trying to keep up with graphics card technology years ago. I just built this rig in January to replace a p3 733 w/ geforce 32meg. :)

The new PC gamer has a great article on Doom III. Says our systems will do fine but they also say this game is a reason to buy a new rig! Haha. Can't wait for some FPS goodness.

Homer, you should come to our next Gaming Lan Party; I'm sure a lot of people would love to Frag Homer!!!

On a 'slightly' more serious note, Hornerjo and I discussed the next Lan Party at our Tech Committee meeting last night and we're shooting for something in mid/late September. We assumed many people wouldn't be available to play in August because of vacation, prior engagements, etc. So, September seems to be the next get together. Should also give most of us some time to practice...

    :)

Here's a link to the minimum system requirements:

    http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/tech/weekly/2690450

The long and short of it is:

    • A 1.5-gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 chip or AMD Athlon 1500.
    • 384 megabytes of memory.
    • Two gigabytes of hard drive space.
    • An nVidia GeForce 3 graphics card or better; or an ATI Technologies 8500 or better.

Not sure what resoloution they're using to get those specs (hopefully not 800x600).

    Oh, I misstated the other day...i have a 9600XT, not 9700XT.

Ahh, never trust the box. Here's some benchmarks

    http://www20.graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030512/geforce_fx_5900-11.html

Here's the real specs from toms hardware:

    Low-End:
    1.5GhzP4 or equivalent
    512MB Ram
    Geforce4 Ti 4800 or Radeon 9500

    Mid-Range:
    2.4GhzP4 or equivalent
    1GB RAM
    Geforce5950 or Radeon 9800 Pro/XT

High_End: Aka Hardware that doesn't exist, but best guess anyway
    3.4GhzP4 or AMD equivalent
    2GB RAM
GeForce 6800 Ultra or Radeon X800 XT PE.

my pc falls in the mid range. I'll need to upgrade my radeon 9700pro 128m card. It hardly ran FarCry anyway ;)
