    Hi,

We are interested in getting a fence for our backyard. Does anyone have recommendations for a good contractor?

    Thanks for any advice.

    Best regards,
    richard

Carter Fence is very popular in the area and the owner is very nice. He helped us when we had an issue with our fence contractor. While I did not pay him for any work he was extremely helpful. I would recommend him anytime.

Whoever you use, just be sure to select one of the approved fence styles, and apply to the modfiication subcommittee of the HOA for fence approval.

FWIW ... the guidelines do ask that if a neighborhood has a certain style of fence already installed, that new fences conform. Its not a requirement, just something to maintain an overall look.

Thanks for the replies. We have gotten HOA approval and are now looking for someone to build it so that it matches the panel we have (to make sure it meets HOA rules).

I used Carter Brothers also and second the recommendation. They did a great job at a reasonable price. They matched an existing fence perfectly.

We used Lions Fence. Richard Lions is the owner and they did a great job.
About two months after the fence was installed we noticed a bowing board (not their fault--a lumber issue). We called them and without a word they silently returned while we were at work and replaced the section. Now that's service! I was actually complaining that they hadn't called me back and looked out the window to see that the work was done!

    Hi,

We contacted Carter fence and he was very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the fence style used in our townhouse complex was unusual and not something they did regularly, his price was a little high. We liked him and I would try him for more normal fences.

Eventually we tracked down the guy who did it for M&S when the townhouse was built and got him to do it. That seemed the best approach since it *is* the style of fence that was there intially so there could be no question about it being the approved style. And, since he did that style of fence routinely, his was the best price.

    Best regards,
    Richard

May I ask which M&S townhouses you are in? We live in the Magic Collection and are planning on having a fence built this Spring. I was just wondering if you were in the same townhouses and if so, would you mind sharing the name of the person that built your fence.

    Thanks!

We're in Windemere (I think that's the model) in Broadlands Southern Walk.

The fence guy is K&K contractors, Mark Krynitsky, 703-330-2636. He is really busy and was hard to reach, but persistance paid off.

    Good luck!

    Best regards,
    Richard

Just a short plug for Carter Fence!

After recent high winds, we had some extensive damage to our fence and I thought we might have to replace almost the entire fence.

Stuart, the owner, came out and told me that he could salvage most of what we already had in place, despite some major issues with access because our neighbors built a fence right alongside ours instead of tying into ours.

He also came out to our property to double check whether or not our fence was on the property line (a long story) and showed me how our fence *is* on the line and also showed us that when the sidewalks were repaired/replaced last year, the contractor damaged the plat marker in the front of the house.

A five man crew showed up to do the work, quickly, neatly and efficiently.

Then, the owner came back to inspect the work later in the afternoon.

It's very rare to see that type of attention to detail and pride in the service you are selling. I wish we had used them for our initial fence construction!

I also forgot - his bid came in for far less than that of any of the other companies!

    Hello,

Have you had your fence built yet? We're also in a Magic Series and called Carter Fence for an estimate based on the recommendations from this board. The gentleman was very nice, but it seemed like this type of fencing was new to him. It's just a plain old privacy fence like all the other townhouses have. I haven't gotten any other estimates, but theirs seemed high to me. I was just curious as to who you went with if you've had your fence built already.

    Thanks!

wow, that seems confusing... I lived in the Magic Collection townhomes for almost three years and remember using Carter Fence to do ours in the back, building upon the existing privacy fence. The price was around $1050 for the whole job and they did it in about 1/2 a day with no trouble.

If you want to double check - the address is 43070 Hunters Green Sq. Perhaps you remember us??? The fence is stained with a cedar color.

I can check my invoice at home to make sure, but I am 99% sure it was them, about 3.5 years ago. This type of job was not new to them then, and is really simple to construct. :huhsign:

... and take a look at the patio in the back the I built, nice huh? Unfortunately the new owners have let it go...

Wow, holy inflation then! Is 43070 an end unit? Our is, and the estimate we got was more than two and a half times the amount you paid!!

One additional reason, besides inflation, that you're getting a high quote is that its in the middle of the building season, and everyone wants decks and fences installed. If you wait until fall or early winter, you may see a different price.

no, 43070 is an interior unit, so the fence would be smaller than the one you need. And yes, time of your is a factor (my guess is that it amounts to about a $500 difference).

And based upon experience in this process - in general, I would suggest getting three quotes minimum and then negotiate. I am pretty certain the lumber used comes right from Home Depot and I would be seriously tempted to do it myself after seeing how generally simple it is to construct. With an auger (which you can rent) to dig the holes, it was almost like the rest was pre-fab and required a few cuts depending on the slope of the ground. The door would be a little more work but even that looked simple enough.

No we are holding off until the fall we figured right now would be the most expensive time to have a fence built. We are 43066 - Hi Dave we remember you!

I can't recommend Carter Fence, of Vienna VA. The owner, Bruce, seemed nice enough, but when I asked for proof of liability insurance and for a "legal" work crew (i.e. no illegals), he called me a racist. Funny thing, I'm 1/4 hispanic.
