My remote (only 1.5 years old) no longer works the fireplace. The light lights up when I press the button. Nothing happens. I am going out tomorrow to get a fresh battery - perhaps that is the issue.

I believe that both the remote and the receiver unit located in the fireplace need batteries. Thus, if the red light on the remote is still working, I would guess that the remote is okay and maybe the receiver needs a new battery.

Very true ... ours takes (I believe) 4 AA batteries. We've been here 5 years, and I had to replace the batteries twice in that time.
