Just got my flu shot from the Loudoun Hospital "remote motorhome". It will be in Broadlands later this week.

$20 for the shot, $5 more than what I paid for it last year. Certainly is a service to have them come to the community to give the shots. Lot of people in line, and I suspect it was very successful for them.

Don't let anyone tell you that LHC is not in it for the profit. They are! Nothing wrong with that, but is mis-leading if they keep playing "poor us" we are a non-profit line.

I am glad they offered the service, and they deserve to make something from it. I wonder what the fee would of been, for the shot, if there was competition?

Safeway was (still is I think) doing flu shots. I seem to remember a sign up for later this week. The day care we take our child to is scheduling them also at a slight discount, $18. Where I work (SAIC) flu shots are $20.

$20 seems about the norm this year. No need to get this into another hospital bashing thread.

I guess the same can be said if you stand in line at Giant and get the shot. I wonder what Giant charges for the shot and what they would charge if there was no competition for them. Gosh how horrible of Loudoun Hospital to offer a convienent way to get vaccinated before the worst flu season hits. When is Reston hospital providing the service of vaccinating the Broadlands residents, when will their moble health van be parked on our streets? ...Will it be free because they care so much for our health? What was Loudoun hospital thinking...gosh $5 more... how horrible of LHC loading up the van, having enough shots on hand for all the people in line, driving to a convient location, staying there for all those in line to get vaccinated. I doubt it was LHC who determines the amount of the shot, I wonder if it has anything to do with supply and demand and the expense this year for making the flu vaccine, the shortage for the vaccine throughout the country and the limited supply available.

I agree with many of your comments. As I stated, I see no problem with LHC making money when providing a good service.

My main observation is, LHC should drop the pretext that they are not for profit, because they obviously ARE.

My subsequent observation is, if you (LHC) are in it for a profit, consumers benefit from competition. Prices are market driven, and also leads to innovation in service offerings. Both good things for the community and consumers. Both only possible when there is a competing force facilitating the dynamic.

In this example, lower prices for flu shots, and innovative delivery options for consumers.

Remember peeps, it takes about 14 days for the flu shot to become effective.
It will last about two - three months.
So, in the meantime, be cool, stay away from sick people
get plenty of sleep, drink orange juice, wash your hands frequently, all of that healthy stuff...
    erm... yeah. ok?

Anyone know if they are still doing flu shots this evening at the Community Center? Or is it postponed due to the weather?

It is a crying shame to see Loudoun Hospital being attacked JUST for offering flu shots. You don't see a mobile center from Reston Hospital here, do you? If so, what do you want to bet that the charge would be double?

Some people will cry about anything.... If you think about it even $100 would not be bad for a shot that just might help you NOT DIE!

Personally, I would like to thank Loudoun Hospital for its years of dedicated service to our community!!!

The price for the flu shots I've seen advertised are from $15-$22.
Yes, it is good to see the local hospitals doing things for the Broadlands community:
LHC is bringing out the van for flu shots.
HCA, through Reston hospital, has donated $5000 to two Broadlands schools.
HCA, through Reston hospital, has conducted a safe sitter class for
Broadlands teens. It was so overbooked that they will be having two more.
HCA sponsored a tree rescue dig for Broadlands residents on their property in Broadlands.

Look at all the good things that happen when their is a little competition!

Like Chris, I would like to thank both hospitals for their years of dedicated service for the citizens of our community.

Competition has nothing to do with the services LHC is and has provided our community...I wonder if it has anything to do with the new leadership they have and the tremendous strides they have made under that new direction. I seriously doubt that potential competiton from HCA has anything to do with it.

It would have been nice if the web site had been updated earlier in the day notifying that the event was cancelled. Personally, I think LCH cancelled a bit early in the day. The roads were not bad at all after 12/1 o'clock. AND I WAS FIRST IN LINE D%#M-IT! :) Now it starts at 0530 and I am NOT an early morning person.

0530 -- taterman must have either a military or european background. Yes, SK8Rm that's 5:30 AM. The concept, I believe, is to allow folks to get shot before they go to work.
"In addition, Loudoun Hospital Center is establishing an easy access flu vaccination clinic at the Lansdowne Campus in anticipation of referral volumes. Located at the South Entrance reception area, the clinic will be opened Monday Dec. 8th - Saturday Dec. 13th from 1:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. for walk in patients."
This is from the Loudoun hospital page cited earlier.

    chris,

I think you are over reacting and to sensitive to this issue. I was just making a logic observation.

    Donna,

With all due respect. LHC has excellent leadership now. They are hyper aware of competition, and I would submit a significant amount of their current activities are related to the "defacto" competition they are receiving from HCA. This country (capitalism) has blossomed due to competitive forces in the market place. I doubt LHC would be spending as much of their profits on service innovations or price constraints if there wasn't "defacto" competition. A lot of this goodwill will be threated if HCA leaves the picture.

My point is just that LHC has been doing a lot for this community prior to HCA poking its nose in and that LHC is being looked at (by some) to only be doing what their doing because of HCA. That is unfair. LHC has been doing more and becoming more vocal about their services because of the new leadership (primarily) and secondly because they are fighting for their survival if (God forbid)HCA gets approval.
