Any gurus out there who can help with this? I have McAfee VirusScan on my HP PC. Normally works fine, but I now keep getting a popup error saying Potential Unwanted Program Detected. It says "the file c:\windows\sytem\msacom.dll is a potentially unwanted program." I have gone to my system program files and see it, but when I try to delete that program, it says it can't delete it....so it just keeps popping up with that error. I have to hit "continue what I was doing," to make it disappear but it keeps reappearing. Arghhhh....

You cant delete due to 1 of 2 reasons that Im aware of.
    1) You do not have admin rights to that file/directory and/or
    2) That .dll file is in use.

If 1 applies have the admin login and delete it.
If 2 applies you will have to close down the program that is using that .dll file and then you can delete it.

** Caution, sometimes anti-virus programs are not always correct. Sometimes they state it is a "possible" virus. Do more research on the web concerning the file as well as the warning message from McAfee.

Good luck and let us know how it went so others can benefit.

Thanks...I'm not quite sure what you mean by "have the admin log in and delete it." Who's the admin?

Something makes me think it's an erroneous warning as it won't "obey" when I hit "continue what I was doing." It just keeps popping up. I've resorted to dragging it out of view instead of clicking out of it. It's just an irritating little bugger.

I guess I'll check with McAfee, maybe they know (since it's their error warning!).

Try disabling McAfee virus scan and then search msacom.dll copy/rename it and see error gors away. I asked you to copy incase McAfee is giving you false alarm and you might need that file. You can revert/copy back that file if you experience any issues with system later as its system dll file.

Depending on operating system you use (Win NT/2K/XP Pro), there will be an ADMIN account and multiple user accounts which have less privileges than admin. You have to login as admin and give file permissions for that file for the rest of the users on the system. Hope you understand... and I guess yours will not be one of 'em I mentioned above.

Try this. Boot up the computer using DOS. Check the manual if you don't know how to do this. Then in dos, find the file and rename the file to something else. Most likely it's a windows program thats in your startup or a schedule program thats running. I wouldn't delete it yet until you see what program needs that dll.

dir /s "filename" - to search for a file name.
rename "from" "to" - renames the file

Also use the short name. Do a dir command and for long names I believe DOS uses a "~".
