:happygrin:Fellow Foodies (and former "Strawberry Samplers"--;))--

Today while working in our strawberry fields, I noticed that our strawberries are coming along nicely. We are "guessimating" that mid-May to June will be when they will ripen up.

For those of you "Strawberry Samplers" from last year, I still have your forum names and will be happy to PM when you can have FREE STRAWBERRIES . For those of you who did not sample the strawberries, just PM or post on this thread your interest.

Right now (family relatives and I) are talking with the Fairfax Farm Markets, Loudoun Farm Markets, and Fresh Farm Markets (located in DC area), and other outlets about selling our strawberries and other produce this Summer. Hubby is out of country for 3 weeks for a business trip--so family relatives, parents, kiddos, and I are in charge of this endeavor. It looks like we will have PLENTY to sell and give away. I will post here on this thread further details about the strawberries and other produce we will sell.

    Thanks.

    Fellow Foodies--

Thanks for all the comments. We will keep you posted on produce availablility.

On a sidenote, for those of you "transplanted Southerners" or not, have "y'all" ever eaten purple hull peas, crowder peas (similar to blackeye peas), zipper cream peas, or white acre peas? All the peas mentioned are Southern varieties of the cowpea family (i.e. field peas or blackeye peas).

The reason that I am inquiring is because we are growing these peas also for ourselves. If we have "extras", would any of "y'all" want to try them? Of course, you would have to shell the peas or we could arrange to have them already shelled for you perhaps.

Also, for those of "y'all" who miss other Southern foods, let me know and I will direct you to where you can locate them. For example, have you tried Boiled Peanuts before?--great item! I also have eaten cracklin cornbread and can obtain fresh craclkins if you wish. My grandparents still love this cornbread crumbled in fresh buttermilk at their farm. Another Southern food is creamed corn that is fried. I can also provide fresh creamed corn for you too.

    Thanks again--

    Hey Foodie,
I would be interested in any kind of peas. I love Southern cooking! However, on our recent trip to Alabama and Florida we came across boiled peanuts - you gotta explain this to me - are they supposed to be really soft, mushy and salty and not have any peanut flavor/taste whatsoever?? What we got was gross - did we get a bad batch or what? I know they are really popular, people love them but I don't see how! I love peanuts - I'm from Williamsburg and every time we go we get salted, roasted, chocolate covered, raw, etc. peanuts! Thanks.

I love (!) VA peanuts, unfortunately I can no longer eat them as I have broken or cracked a tooth or two while chewing them. I know a big southern thing is to put peanuts in a Coke.

    webeadams, Brassy, and others--

Just putting the twins and quads to bed :indiff2:after dinner --and baths--:shakehead: (yes, we get up early at 5 am on the farm!)--I thought I would thank you for your interest in our strawberries and other items. We will keep you up on the produce availability. Also, I can provide resources for cracklins if you wish for cracklin cornbread and other Southern foods.

    webeadams and Brassy--

Below is a great link for Boiled Peanuts in the South and a little history. Also, if you are doing it yourself, you should use raw green peanuts--one way the Southerners have being "going green" before it was "politically correct"--. I use my pressure cooker when I prepare our peanuts for boiling. It is an acquired taste!

www.whatscookingamerica.net/History/BoiledPeanutsHistory.htm (What's Cooking America's site/info. Info and recipe for Boiling Peanuts.)

    Good eats--

    Foodie

    P. S. Boy, will I be glad when hubby returns from overseas from his business trip! My parents and sisters, brothers, and their families are helping us from GA until June on our farm work.

    See "y'all"--

I eat my weight in strawberries.....I love them so much. As a kid growing up - my parents and I would always go strawberry picking - of course I ate more than I picked. :) My husband always teases me that he never gets a chance to eat them because I eat them so fast.....they're SO good. Has anyone ever gone to the Strawberry Festival at Sky Meadows Park in Paris, VA. OH MY - those strawberries are huge and delicious. YUMO.

    Brassy and others--

Well, hubby flies back from England late Friday afternoon from his business trip, just in time for Mother's Day weekend--finally!;) As far as when the farmer(s) are away--the mice playing--only if our barn cats catches the mice.:pofl: (Which they usually do!)

In my case, my six-pack of kids are what I chase! Seriously, chasing kids and other farm chores keeps me out of trouble and very busy. My parents and other "kin" are still here on the farm until Memorial Day weekend helping us out. Thankfully, the rain has helped our berries, peas, and other produce in our gardens and hoop greenhouses so we don't have to use our irrigation system and sprinklers.

    Have a good week--

    Fellow Foodies--

We have been busy in our 2 acres of strawberry fields. The berries are looking great!

KellyNIke and bdiehl-- I have added you to this list of "Strawberry Samplers" and perhaps berry purchasers if interested.

We will keep you posted of the availability. If you are interested, just PM us or post your interest (or not) on this thread. Since my husband's return from England and family's visit through May or June (they may stay longer) to help us on our farm, we have been busy "gearing up" for Summer.

Have a good Memorial Day weekend. We will be away next week; and I will check my emails periodically and report later on the strawberries and other items.

    j3mom, shannonmc--

You have been added to the list. We have 2 acres of strawberries waiting to be harvested. So we will see how they fare for the season.

Have a good Memorial Weekend and week--
