Seems our garbage disposal just died. Makes a humming sound but it is not jammed and pressing reset button or using the allen wretch makes no difference. Has anyone else had to replace this yet? Our home is 7 years old and it is an insinkerator model 5-81. I am wondering if you did have to replace yours did you get a different model and did you have to reconfigure pipes to make it work?

    Thanks

I had a similar problem last week but fortunately the reset button did the trick.

It's good have an idea of how to repair garbage disposal units. This knowledge will come in handy should the device malfunction at some point. When the appliance works efficiently, it contributes to the smooth flow of kitchen operations, which you may take for granted most of the time. You only realize how vital the appliance is when it fails to run. When your garbage disposal won’t turn on yet it hums, it is likely that the flywheel is stuck. This is usually caused when an object gets stuck in the flywheel or between an impeller and shredder ring. It is also possible that the circuit breaker may have tripped in which case the unit won’t turn on. Below is a guide on how to repair in both cases.

It isn't stuck because I used the allen wretch on the bottom with no issue. The power is on because I hear the hum, I think it is just dead.

Our original one died a few years ago. I went to Home Depot and bought a replacement. Both were insinkerators and looked similar, but the new one was more powerful (1/2 hp vs 1/3 hp if I remember right). It fit right in, no plumbing changes needed. I think the insinkerator site had the instructions with dimensions, but I'm not sure. YMMV...

(And of course, throw the circuit breaker before starting.)

    Good luck.

Thanks for help everyone. I read great reviews about the Waste King and ordered it through Costco.com, model 9980. It had a listing of ones that could be easily replaced with this model and listed our current insinkerator as a good one that fits with the waste king. I am hopeful that it will be an easy fix.
