There is no Halloween parade scheduled for this year. There will be a party for 4th to
6th graders on Oct. 23rd. It is my understanding that participation and volunteers - especially volunteers - had dropped off significantly in the past few years.

YUP. many of us on the events committee are the same people who do quite a few events, and we can only do so much. the new faces that have shown up have been AWESOME though- so whatever events we CAN have- bet on them being fantastic!

So, does this mean Santa is out too? We didn't have the Easter Egg hunt, and now the Halloween parade, I'm guessing the other events for the adults and older kids are too time consuming to host events for the young kids.

If you need volunteers, you need to advertise in the newsletter and on the forums. And before you ask, I cannot volunteer at this time due to work and home obligations.

So what events ARE planned for the remainder of the year? I would also like to know if the committee is targeting a particular age group or the community as a whole. From my observations, it looks like the events committee does not organize events for kids 9 years old and younger. Is that a correct observation?

The reason I bring this up is that, like many others, I'm quite disappointed that our community has lost some of it's major/most popular events, such as the Easter event and the Halloween parade. Trust me, I know they're difficult to organize, but they focused on our community as a whole and not just a very limited age bracket.

So the question remains; what events has the current Events committee organized so far this year, and what do you currently have planned for the remainder of the year?

    Thanks.

it IS in the newsletter and on the forums- there is no lack of asking or opportunity for those who aren't inundated with work and home obligations to jump in. that's how I found out about it- thru the newsletter. between a full time job, a kid a dog and a separate business enterprise, I find volunteering in the community important enough to find a way. it's not even THAT time consuming, so it's not as hard as I thought it might be.

tigger, many residents just want the bennies of community events but don't want to or, like you- have the time to- volunteer to make it happen. don't blame the committees that work hard to put on events with a skeleton crew for not asking for volunteers- blame the thousands of of residents who don't volunteer for events that they expect to happen.

sorry to rant- that just chafes me that the only people who ARE volunteering are somehow responsible for NOT having enough volunteers... :screwy:

Redon, I think what Tigger was asking, was did the Events committee specifically ask for volunteers for the Halloween parade or 'just in general'. I bet that most of the community had no idea that the Halloween parade was 'at risk'. I think if the committee would ask for volunteers for specific events, you might get a better response. That's what we do on the Tech Committee and we always have people wanting to help us with Flicks in the Sticks, etc.

In this current environment, if the Events committee just goes around asking for help 'in general', I don't think it will be a very successful way of gathering volunteers. I bet if concentrate on our most popular events and state point blank "If we don't get enough volunteers for the Halloween Parade this year, it will be canceled.", I'm sure you would get a better response.

    Just my 2 cents...

i don't have the whole schedule, I am just working a few events. but i will ask the question and get the answers for you.

different events are targerted for every age group. some aren't happening again because of lack of community participation, some because of lack of volunteers. don't ask me to specify- i can't.

i can't speak for the other committee memebers but i can honestly say that i never volunteer for the under 9 events- i don't have a kid that age, so i volunteer for other things that fit my family. if we had more volunteers with kids in that group- it's be easier to put the vents on. I know the committee prez WANTS events for every age group, and i think she does an amazing job at putting together a schedule for all ages. but when volunteers don't come out to help- some things go away.

i'll get the schedule and post it.

Not having had to organize events... wouldn't it be easier to ask for volunteers for events where the volunteers don't have kids in the target age group? That way, the people who do have kids in the age group can participate in the event. I guess it's a two-edged sword, though, since some may have a similar thought that if they don't have kids in the age group, it doesn't benefit them to volunteer. But this is why I volunteer for any event for kids... not having any, I don't mind if I miss out on the functions themselves, freeing up at least one 'rent to participate in the event with their littleuns.

    Hmm.....

hmm. i'll bring it up at the next meeting. the way it worked this year, you go to an event planning meeting- you suggest events that you want to see happen and you hear about events that are all ready in planning that need volunteers. you choose what you want to be involved in and you work on it. the meetings aren't long, and there are always refreshments. :)

i like that because i went with an open mind and the option to pick and choose and suggest. the problem with asking for a specific thing, like the halloween parade, is that planning for it would need to start sometime in mid summer. it's not exactly at the top of folks' minds, so pleas in July for Halloween parade volunteers may not work any better than general please throughout the year to "join the committee and choose to participate in events HOA sponsored events to benefit your neighbors and your family"

techno- that's actually a good point- people think in SO many ways- so no matter what- someone will like/not like a plan, an event, etc.

i'm not a kid person. i don't like being around groups of small children- never have, not even when mine was a small child! so as he gets older and moves into an age group i don't mind being around, I can be more involved. exactly the opposite works for you!

there is no one right way. bottom line is: volunteer. put your name out there and say "i am interested in helping with events for this age group or this time frame" and the committee will contact you and you can choose what works for you.

it's an open, welcome, wonderful committee that is flexible on ideas and planning strategies, so PLEASE- anyone lamenting the loss of an event- EMAIL me and I'll get you in touch with the folks who can use your help bringing it back...

We went through this back when the Easter Egg hunt was canceled.
    http://www.broadlandshoa.org/hoaforum/showthread.php?t=14804

Like I mentioned before, it helps to ask for volunteers. There has been nothing in the newsletter or forums. But I kind of got flamed then and here we go again... so I'm staying out of this one. I hope we get the Easter and Halloween events back for next year. Good luck.

I'm concerned by this trend also. I see lots of adult events, but there seems to be more of a demand for young child events in this area, so why not concentrate there?

umm- NO. i know nothing technical and would have nothing to and to a tech committee meeting. but if i DID have skills, and i wanted to see technical improvements, you bet i'd be there.

i'm thrilled with the job ya'll do now- whatever it IS that you DO do... keep up the good work! lol

the goal is to evenly spread the events out over all age groups. the adult events get high attendance and a pretty good set of volunteers. if more people participated in/volunteered for those young children events- THEY WOULD HAPPEN.

let me throw this disclaimer out there- i do NOT run the events committee- i am simply a volunteer on several projects. this is all JUST MY 2 CENTS as a volunteer.

    Hi everyone,

First of all, I think the events planning committee does a fantastic job with all the other events in Broadlands (Broadlands Live, Flicks, etc). Thank you!

However, this is the first that I've heard of a call for volunteers for the Halloween Parade. My sis-in-law and I will be happy to volunteer for this if we can resurrect it for this year. Anyone else in? How about the weekend of October 24th - 25th? It doesn't have to be anything fancy - just an opportunity for the young ones to walk around in their costumes and collect little goodies/candy. We can order from the Oriental Trading catalog. Are there any decorations we can use that were used last year?

    I'll be available to help.

It is more enticing to volunteer for something specific rather than in general. With that said, I'm not as active in volunteering as Redon and Mr. Linux and others, but I do try to help when I can. My four kids appreciate the activities and as a parent I appreciate the activities because it gives my kids something to do......for a nominal charge!
