As to the back up with the right turn lane onto 28 from wegmans. Yes, as Izzysmom explained...those of us who have lived here (it seems forever) remember when the walmart was where Wegmans is. At that time, people actually lived in the abandoned green house on the corner. They always had something up there, like back out mirrors or slow down signs since they had an awfully hard time getting out of their driveway. Moving ahead quite a few years. The stop sign and moving into the turn lane meant just as much of a long wait as it is now with a light. You think anyone would let you merge in now...imagine what it was like prior to the light. So now it does take longer since we have so many more stores there, but you know what? A bit longer at a light means much better improved safety in that lane.

I am another person who will no longer shop at the Rt. 28 Target/Wegman's due to the poor traffic configuration. I contacted Wegman's to let them know that they were losing my business as well as others due to the traffic situation. I figured they would have a bigger impact in getting this addressed than a lowly citizen of the county. This is the reply I received:

"I share the same frustration as you daily when I leave the store
as I go right on Waxpool myself. I will tell you that Wegmans has had
nothing to do with putting in the light in question. I think it is
foolish. I have been in touch with the county a few times to share my
concern as a retailer. They have forwarded my concerns to VDOT who is
supposedly coming to do a traffic study to see if any changes can be
made. I wish I had more information to share but at this point it is in
VDOT's hands to look for a resolution that can push more traffic
through at peak times as well as remain a safe driving area. I thank you for
the comments and we are aware and are trying to have something done to
rectify the situation. If you or anyone from The Broadlands HOA has any
more questions regarding this please don't hesitate to contact me via
email or the phone number listed below."

    Thanks,

Tell him money talks. The only way they are going to get changes in is by having the retailers paying for it all... and their business is suffering until doing so.

I don't usually experience much backup when turning right onto Waxpool coming out of the Wegmans/Target area. I will say, though, that having an actual stoplight at the right turn lane seems a bit much. You don't usually see that at intersections and it seems to just slow things down.

I heard there is another wegmans going in off of rt 15 i believe, until that store is open I do not think wegmans is going to have a huge drop off in people going in there - it is always packed.

IMO - that right stoplight onto Waxpool from Waxpool is not foolish. I agree with Izzysmom, I remember when you had to merge onto Waxpool and it was VERY dangerous. I don't mind waiting for this stoplight as I feel it's a lot safer.

I must admit that when I am going that way it's typically during the week mid-day, so there is a lot less traffic than during rush hours or on weekends. During weekends and busy times that light probably makes a lot more sense.

Good Lord - if Brassy and I did our shopping the way we WANT to, it would be something like this:

Costco for meat - goodness they have nice beef!
HT for the milk (cheap and the only place we've found that sells no-growth hormone stuff) and the wine selection isn't bad. To get good deli stuff ask for the Deetz & Watson by name.
Wegmanns for produce and unusual stuffs - their chicken salad is to die for.
Safeway for staples and the pharmacy.

Now, mind you, that's al all day event with a cooler inth e back. Needless to say - we don't do that for real. :(

gotta disagree on Dietz and Watson- their black forest ham was GROSS when we got it- maybe it's b/c we compare it to the Wegmans brand and Boar's Head...

here's a Safeway rant: went Saturday to get a few staples (beer, cheese, regular weekend necessities!) and picked up some fresh chives. when i opened them the scent of HOT TRASH wafted thru my kitchen- it was absolutely RANCID. then- we opened the apple cider- expiration not til November- and it smelled like- you guessed it- apple cider VINEGAR. gross.

took both back and politely informed management that since things have fallen SO far in quality they "won't see me spending $300- $400 in groceries there EVER again, and I live less than 1 mile from your store."

I agree with you! I bought a bagged salad at Safeway about 2 weeks ago that looked ok, and the expiration/sell by date was at least 5 days away. When I opened it, it smelled soooo bad! I think I'm going to have to limit my shopping there to the pharmacy/canned/dry goods and absolute emergencies.

Yuck about the salad! I get some nice organic green leafy lettuce, clean it, put in a plastic bag with paper towels and I have it for several days. I used to buy the organic spring mix in the big plastic tub but got so disgusted with always finding some slimy pieces of salad in the mix. I've found this to be the case in every store. It didn't matter how far out the date was. I also think it's such a waste of plastic (even if we do recycle it).

I totally agree with Villager on this. I still think VDOT should set the light to blinking red between, say, 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., when westbound traffic is lighter.

I sent Safeway corporate this email- I will DEFINITELY post their response:

I live less than 1 mile from the Ashburn store and used to spend $400/month there, bought all of my meat there and used the gas station. But the quality has deteriorated so much that I drive 5 more miles to Wegmans rather than chance long lines since there are so few checkers, and expired products, and get my gas elsewhere. The clincher was this weekend- I wanted meat but the selection was so small I couldn't find what I was looking for. I had to settle for a different cheese because Shredded Kraft Cheddar/Jack wasn't available- I NEVER used to have a problem finding the items I need. I bought fresh chives from your produce dept and Apple Cider- neither were expired, but both were ROTTEN- the chives smelled like spoiled TRASH when I opened them and the cider- like vinegar. Quality at this store gets worse and worse every week, and myself and my neighbors now choose to shop elsewhere since we have so many options. It's a shame- Safeway is the closest, and was the favorite for many of us in 2006. So if your sales continue to decline at this store- now you know why. PLease let local management know that they have driven off a customer that had used Safeway faithfully since moving to this area in 2001.

    Regards,

    Renee Ventrice

We use Safeway like it's a 7-11 rather than our regular grocery store. Great for stuff we happen to run out of - diapers, diet pepsi, box of cereal, etc. NEVER for produce or dairy. I was going to go to Wegmans this morning but the thought of sitting on Waxpool and adding another car to the rush hour mix was enough to quickly change my mind. Went to the Giant at Ryan Park instead and was pleased with the produce, dairy, meats and the cashier was super friendly. (can't say the same for Safeway!)

I've never done this before, but I was in Wegmans around 8:30 last Saturday morning and it was heavenly. The cashier said that if you get in before 9, you're golden. I never go after work and even later in the evening, it's still pretty crowded. Getting in and out of Target at that time was a piece of cake, too. I could be motivated to do that more often on a Sat. morn.

I usually stop at Wegmans on my way home around 5-5:30 at least twice a week to pick up a few things and I never have a problem getting in or out. The store has not been that crowded at all--I'm usually the 2nd in line to check out and it goes quickly. I'd much rather wait as 2nd in line at Wegmans than wait to check out at Giant or even Harris Teeter. Anytime I've gone in there, there are only one or two registers open and a line of people.

In addition, I don't always like the red light to turn right onto Waxpool from Pacific Blvd., but when rush hour is in effect, it does open Waxpool up for me when the light turns green for us.

Thats why we have broken most of our shopping into different days. Of course, we are dinks, so we can get away with spacing out store visits.

Hopefully the VDOT study will realize that it is silly to have the red light stay red for most of the light cycles. Especially during non-rush times on waxpool, which is when the light is the most frustrating. I never went to Weg-world during rush hour before, and never had to wait to merge onto waxpool as long as that light takes to cycle. I understand that during the rush hour, it makes sense, but on a Sunday morning it is just plain stupid.

I say keep the light, but allow it to "blink" red during times when it would be safe to "merge", and go solid red when people would be turning left out of AOL, and Green when it would be completely safe.
