Help!! My husband and I thought we smelled a skunk the other night and now we are sure we smell it coming from our backyard. We think it may be living under our deck. What do we do? Who do we call? Is this an animal control issue? Any advice would be great, the smell is killing us and we have a lab that I'm afraid is gonna get it soon!!

    ayayagirl--

One thing we try when a skunk has sprayed near our home is to get a clean spray bottle and use a mixture of ammonia and water. Dilute the ammonia with water in the spray bottle and spray around the affected areas near your home.

I would try that to rid the "stinky" skunk smell :eww: and that may run the skunk away from your deck area. The ammonia mixture diluted with water is a natural method to rid the spray that done by skunks. It is not harmful either to the "varmints". NEVER MIX AMMONIA WITH BLEACH. THIS IS VERY TOXIC!

Since we live on land and farm, we will experience unwanted "varmints" sometimes. The ammonia mixture diluted with water will work, trust me!

    Good luck and Blessings--

Are you sure it's not pear tree blossoms? They are in bloom right now and they smell *bad*. Come over and sniff my tree, ahem, and see if it's the same smell.

We had a skunk living under the deck at my old job in Leesburg. We had to call a pest control company who set a trap. I don't think they ever caught the skunk, although they did catch a groundhog and a family of possums...

LOL!! No, I know that stinky tree smell! This smell is only at night and since skunks are nocturnal we are pretty sure. The first time we smelled it we thought it might be in the garage, but last night the smell was definitely coming from the backyard. Usually at night when we let the dog out, she goes and wants right back in. Last night we had to call her in, so she must have smelled something too.

Ammonia-soaked rags under the deck did it for me

Went out to fill the feeders and boy oh boy the skunk smell was strong. I thought skunks only spray when threatened - so some poor animal/cat/raccoon is smelling pretty earthy right now.

Thanks for the advice. It seems like the ammonia thing is what I've read about too. I guess you have to out smell them!! We'll see what happens tonight.

Thanks! I saw this site when I was researching. We haven't smelled the skunk this past week, but we've had so much rain. We will keep our noses on the lookout and see what happens. I'm hoping he was just scoping out the place and decided this wasn't a great location to set up shop!
