Yeah, I live real close to that hill and used to take my kids there in that same time period, shortly after the main building was constructed. (Of course, there haven't been many buildings after that.) Took the Flexible Flyer down myself one time and yes, that was pretty scary scary scary - especially considering that we'd sprayed the runners with silicone. I do
remember hearing that a chid had to be airlifted from there once; hit a bump and went airborne into the parking lot.

I can't really believe that this discussion is going on in weather approaching 100 degrees.

My position on the use of the hill is on here already. So, I won't go through it all over again and instead will just summarize. If you are the type of parents who wants your kid(s) to sled down a dangerous hill right into the middle of a busy road, please make sure that you don't sue me because you don't like how your kid looks as the new hood ornament for my car.

Oh my stars, Lee... My hubby went to Rutgers and he once showed me that hill. I can't believe anyone survives after sledding on that hill! I would think they'd all be road pizza.

So I'm one of those folks who live on the backside of the hill. Let me just say that parents/kids haven't typically given a crap about the yards at the bottom.

Before we built our fence, kids would regularly sled their way into our yard, banging into our trees and treading through our yard. Now, they just sled into our fence and climb over the fence (breaking off the wooden slats).

Some kids and parents in this area have no sense of respecting others' property and don't even think that it might make sense to offer to replace the things they've destroyed.

I don't care what they do with the hill as long as the solution includes the "re-programming" of certain parents and their offspring.

I think I've covered a few threads here.

The reason we're talking about it now is that Van Metre announced at the last HOA board meeting that they were thinking of getting rid of the hill altogether. I was hoping to persuade them otherwise, but the new Loudoun Extra has an article that it's a done deal. August will be the end of the hill. So much for valuing their homeowners' opinions!

It is time we the people take back control of where we live.

There is big money coming in here and a lot of it is not for the betterment of our community and that big money needs to be looked at closely by the people.

    Listening mr snow and barbara!!!!!!!!!!!

With the level of complete lack of common sense and decency being shown by these parents and their unfortuante offspring, I am shocked that you have not been sued for having a fence that might give them splinters.

    joy,

Thanks. I had no idea that the HOA was even discussing it. However, as one of the "litigiously aware" mentioned in the article, I am happy to hear about the outcome of the decision. Still, I prefer any community decision to be made in open and discussed from all angles, especially those affected.

Yes that hill is the wrong place for sledding. The landing zone is a bit "hot." However, are there any alternative locations? Or have we eliminated yet another child-hood joy from our kids' lives? I guess Nintendo will come out with sledding for the Wii and it will all be good.

Obviousy it's a liability for VM.

They offered it to the HOA and the HOA refused. Right?

It's been a headache for them (VM) for awhile so they're going to go ahead and take care of the "problem".

This originally happened when I was on the HOA Board, and the Board did not want to take the liability issues that went with the fill dump (AKA .. the hill).

Alot of ideas were tossed around about what to do with that area, but the issues with sledding into the road, teens using the top of the berm for beer parties and sex seem to have forced VM (who would have had to pay for any improvements) to realize that they would do themselves (and IMHO, the HOA) a favor to take out the fill and level the area for other uses.

I really really could understand if this was a natrural hil that VM was trying to tear down. Then the outrage would be understable, but is seems like VM is plowing down a big trash heap. So be it.

Unlikely in our lifetime. I've seen whole malls built in the time that they took to pour the cement.

That 'trash heap,' as you call it, is keeping the value of the homes around it at a nicer level since they do not have neighbors directly behind them. If by trash heap you mean the thing that is visually pleasing, grass and tree covered, and offers a nice view around it, then i think trash heap does not mean what you think it means.

Your home isn't natural, so is okay to call it a trash heap and tear it down?

Just keeps making my point about many things that are happening in this county of late that will hurt property values. Believe it is NOT the big developments it is and will be the smaller ones.

Thing is...Nobody wants to be responsible for what may happen on the hill.

Who here will pick higher property value and a chance of being liable for what may happen on the hill?
