Anyone have any recommendations on hitch mounted cargo carriers, such as this one:

We'll be heading to a beach house in a few weeks and were thinking of getting one of these for our SUV so we can have a couple big 'Rubbermaid' crates full of things we'll need to take with us for the week. It's amazing how quickly an SUV can get filled up when you have kids ;)

Anyone have any recommendations? Our Honda Pilot has a 2" receiver, so we would just need the carrier. Anything we should look for and/or avoid? Any brands to avoid? We'll probably use it only once a year, so we'd like to keep costs at a minimum. Thanks!

I don't have any specific recommendations; however I have seen ones that have a 2" receiver on the back. This allows you to take a couple rubbermaids and still have a bike rack. I would be careful with how you load it but many of the carriers will hold 200-500lbs. Typically a class III hitch is rated to carry 10% of the tow weight on the tongue. So if the Pilot is 5k towing then you should be good to 500lbs (I would verify this in your owners manual). One word of advice is that putting that much weight, that far back .. she's gonna drive like a pig ;)

LOL! Thanks for the heads up! Yea, our Pilot has a Class III hitch, but I doubt we'll be putting anything over 200lbs on this thing. I think we'll maybe have a big cooler on there and another rubbermaid with some odds and ends. We don't need a bike rack, so it would only be the carrier.

One of my concerns is if the license plate view gets obstructed, I'll probably have to temporarily move it to the carrier. Something I'll probably have to measure prior...

We bought one of these and used it for a beach trip. The problem for us (it was on a mini-van) is that it rode too low. Every bump we hit the bottom of the carrier scraped the pavement and sent up a spray of sparks. Made for an interesting trip though . . .
