How much luck has anyone had in attracting hummingbirds? I don't recall seeing any last year but then again, I did not have a feeder or many flowering plants then either.

Hi Carol! I got this beautiful blue glass feeder at Lowe's last year of all places. We just filled it with the sugar water that they recommend for them, and it does work (though makes a mess on the deck!). We had quite a few of them, and they were even friendly (I got within a foot of one!). I also had some hanging plants on the deck that they seemed to like. I will try to remember the names and let you know if you are interested. They also frequent my neighbors place. I'm always amazed by them!

    Cheers,
    Christina

I'm so glad to hear that they are around here. In fact, I did buy a hummingbird feeder at Lowe's over the weekend as well as a few bright red flowering plants so fingers are crossed they'll come around!

We bought a red feeder last year and it was great. We put it on the deck outside the breakfast room window and the birds would always seem to show up around dinner time. My 2-year old love it.

We just put our feeder out again this past weekend and one showed up last night around dinner time again.

They actually migrated back to this area in mid-April and will leave in September.

Note to self: Must get a feeder!

They also like fuschias, among other flowering plants.

Has anyone had any luck in attempting to photograph a hummingbird?

Haven't tried yet. But not a bad idea.

In our case, they seem to come to the feeder several times within a relatively short block of time. In fact, I'll see them come to the feeder and then go hang around the trees in the backyard for a few minutes. They then reappear and get some more sugarwater. Then they're gone again. I would wait until I see one and get the camera ready for their reappearance in a few minutes, and hope I get lucky.

Let me know your results when you try! If I get some coming around, I'll give it a try as well!

Great...we actually have two on our deck as well. Hopefully once this weather stabilizes they will start coming around.

I actually had a hummingbird come into my house last year, into my two story family room. He was scared and kept flying around to get out of the high windows. I waited and luckily he settled down upstairs on the overlook to the family room, then scooped him up into a shoe box and let him go outside. I had flowers just outside the door so I guess that's what attracted him. This is the second or third time I've had a bird in my family room - I guess I'll have to make sure the door is shut this year. It was cool to see the hummingbird close up though but made my dogs go berserk.

Just wanted to pass along the hummingbirds have finally arrived!!! We were out on our deck yesterday circa sixish and a beautiful brilliant hummingbird with red and green coloring fluttered around our deck enjoying the flowers. We noted the bird was more interested in our flowers than the feeder we had out.
