Has anyone had more insulation blown in or put in so the room above the garage is not so cold? If so did you notice and difference and would you refer the company or person you used. I wouldn't doubt there is none....the room is so much colder....

Probably a very common complaint during these cold winter days...mine is the same way and it's the Master Bedroom/Bath that is affected.

might want to make sure the insulation was done properly by the builder .. I remember watching a Holmes on Holmes (up in Canada, eh!) about this exact issue and it turned out there was a gap in the insulation in the garage ceiling and it was just channeling cold air up there and causing it to be frigid. They solved it by doing the spray in expanding foam insulation and proper air barriers.

Have you insulated the exterior walls of the garage? How about the garage doors?

During the summer I plan to add either another sheet of drywall or 2x4's, insulation and then drywall to help with this problem. I am going to try and insulate the doors later this week, my poor son freezes at night.

I saw that Holmes on Holmes too. It's on my agenda to take a look at our garage insulation. The cold air affects the room above as well as the foyer beside (which is always very cold).

We have the same house as gardecki, and everyone we know with this house has the same problem. And the bedroom right next to that one gets all the heat!

I know people that have had it done but they live in NJ....I guess I will start calling around to see how it can be done. It should be a simple fix. The floor is ice cold. That bedroom next door does get all the heat, we actually have the vent halfway closed!!

Have you had the ducts checked to see if they are blocked or detached?

Are you in a VM Parkdale? We have the same problem even after paying extra to have the garage insulated and finished with drywall. I know that it was insulated because I saw it during construction. I think the problem is that the vent in the room is at the end of the line and too far away from the furnace and the blower.

Yes it is the VM Parkdale. I am going to have our Heating and AC company come to take a look at. I just went up in the attic and was afraid I was going to come through the wall..... Our heating and AC company, Climatic is owned and operated by a good friend of ours. I will let you know what they say. I am also have CASE come in on Tuesday to give me an estimate on how much to blow more insulation in there. It is a huge waist of heat....

Do you have dual heating/AC units?

We sure do have dual units. We have them serviced each year. I should have mentioned it the last time they were here but it didn't cross my mind. Seriously I couldn't find a place to walk in the attic, it is covered with insulation, maybe the vent isn't connected properly. I will leave the investigation to the owner of Climatic, he is actually coming to my house this weekend for dinner ( do you think he'll mind having to climb through all that stuff)!!!

We live in a Parkdale as well and know the exact bedroom discussed here. Also, the walk-in closet in that bedroom was always freezing even with the vent open. My husband installed some foam insulation pieces, pushed it underneath the carpet and then underneath the baseboards, running along the exterior wall with the windows. He also put weather stripping on the windows. I definately felt a difference. It could probably use some additional insulation though, but those were quick, cheap and easy fixes to help.

We will be instlling a higher Seer rated HVAC unit upstairs this spring. OUrs is 10 seers and that was installed right before they ruled that 13 seers or more belong in a house our size 3200 - not including the finished basement(Sinclair II - before the model was built with 8" of house sized down).
When that is installed, they will be redirecting/perhaps adding vents so we get even air distribution in the house. Yes the middle bedroom in our house also heats up- thanks to the shelter from being there - rather than on the side of the house. And the north facing rooms are colder than the southern facing rooms. you walk out of th kitchen into the hall and can feel it immediately. Probably due to the high foyer and openess of that whole area.

Please let us know what the HVAC company tells you. I’m on the verge of getting someone to come out and take a look at ours.

We mentioned this to VM when we first moved in (we live in a Parkdale as well) and we specifically asked for more insulation. They responded with, "if there's too much insulation then it won't do any good." So we had them put in another air vent. It still doesn't do any good. Our au pair, who is German, doesn't have a problem with the room though...and I don't know how she does it, but it does stay a comfortable temperature now. The only thing she does differently is close the door to the room. Not that that will help, but it's just a reaffirmation of the crappy job done on cookie cutter houses that went up too quickly.
