Can anyone recommend a Japanese steakhouse in the area that offers "hibachi" service? I have never had it, but I understand that this refers to the tableside preparation of your meal (think "Police Academy" and the boiling goldfish :D).

I noted that Nagoya in Ashburn Farm has been previously recommended in these forums, but I don't know if they offer hibachi.

    Thanks!

I believe it's called tepan or tepan-yaki cooking.

Nagoya does offer it. We've never tried tepan there -- but they do have decent sushi.

There's also a place in Chantilly called Otani. It's in the strip mall on the northeast corner of Rt. 28 and Rt. 50. We went there a few years ago and it was very good. Not sure how it rates today, though.

Pats - Nagoya is pretty good. Kobe in Leesburg or Countryside is also not bad. They both have the chefs that bang the spatulas and do "stupid food tricks" :)

If you are planning on taking the kids, make sure you prep them and keep them comforted when they light the fire on the grill (you can feel the heat blast when they put some oil on the grill and ignite it). Connor got a bit afraid the first couple of times, but overall he loves it.

Most offer a staple of steak, chicken, shrimp and lobster. Make sure you get the fried rice. They make it on the grill. They will also do the food toss, where everyone gets a chance to catch a piece of shrimp.

My wife and I like Nagoya although we've never sat at one of the hibachi tables (I don't like the idea of eating with a bunch of strangers and dealing with the aforementioned stupid food tricks). We always sit at one of the bar-type tables and get sushi and hibachi chicken/shrimp and it's excellent. I really recommend them although we haven't been there in a while...but now that someone brought it up we may have to go this weekend.

We LOVE Kobe in Leesburg. We tend to go almost once a month. We like it much better than Nagoya. Nagoya isnt bad, we just prefer Kobe. The Kobe in Sterling is not as good as the Leesburg location.

Does anyone know if the Otani Japanese Steakhouse in Ashburn (on Waxpool Road) has opened yet? I've seen a banner outside the shopping center, but don't know if it has officially opened. Thanks for any info!!

I'm not one for "stupid chef tricks" at these places, where they throw food at you....at one of those places, the chef threw shrimp at me and landed right on my favorite brand new silk blouse....it did stain and it never came out.....

I love Nagoya and we go there for my birthday every year. Thankfully we don't have to share the table since there's so many family members. I really like the food. The kids like the stupid chef tricks.

Off topic story about Nagoya though: My 4 year old wanted to have his birthday dinner there last year (in July). We were sitting there when 4 or 5 Redskin players came in for dinner. They kept sweatshirt hoods over their heads (like we couldn't tell by their faces who they were!) and they sat at one of the tables all to themselves. Our chef rolled his eyes and said he couldn't stand cooking for them because they're impersonal and rude. Well then when it was time to sing happy birthday to my son (the restaurant was not full) the 3 other tables sang, but not one of the Redskins players acknowledged the fact a little boy was celebrating his 4th birthday there. I wasn't expecting them to get up and slap 5's with my son, I wasn't expecting them to sign autographs, not expecting them to do anything more than acknowledge the birthday, but when the entire restaurant is singing to a little boy they could have at least looked up and mouthed the words or something. Heck, they could have clapped after he blew out his candle, but nothing. It irked my father so much that he refuses to wear the jersey of one of the Redskin players that were there. But I digress...

Thats a good story. They are very well paid, and public figures, I think you should out who it was.

Clinton Portis, Rock Cartwright, Fred Smoot, Ladell Betts, and one other one whose name escapes me at the moment.

One Redskin, however, will be immortalized as our favorite when he held a conversation with my boys at Glory Days when we were there for dinner one night: Chris Cooley. He was awesome. The boys loved him. This time we actually approached him (the restaurant was closing and there was no one else in the restaurant). He was sitting at the bar with his mother and girlfriend. He slapped 5's with the boys and asked if they were going to watch the Redskins this year. The boys were elated with him as were we.

All it takes is 1000's of 15 second interactions to be considered a "good guy" in pro sports.

There is a famous conversation between a young Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.
Jack: "How do you know when you have signed enough autographs"
Arnie: "When you are ready to leave the tour."

The point is that the fans pay athletes' salaries. Every fan is paying a small portion of that athletes' salary. When an athleter is rude to his fans, you are making it evident that he really doesn't care about getting paid.

Well those players would LOVE me and my family. I wouldn't recognize any of them. You could say to me, "Hey! Look! It's [insert name here]" and I wouldn't have a clue who you were talking about. [IMG]

Jack Nicklaus and Arnie? Now THAT is a different story. [IMG]

You originally asked for someplace local but if you're willing to go downtown (Wisconsin Ave just up the hill from M Street) the Japan Inn is the best teppanyaki around. The chefs are all from Japan and rarely speak English. They do not do all the tricks that the local places do. So if you're looking for a more adult evening with outstanding food Japan Inn is the place.
