We've been having about 4-5 deer come into our backyard everyday and would prefer to keep them out since I have 2 small children. Any suggestions other than fencing off the yard? Anyone try one of those "invisible" fences to keep rodents, deer, etc out? Does it work?

    Thanks!

What will the deer do to your small kids??? It's not like they would stick around if your kids went outside.

well..a couple of the deer have antlers and I heard from others that you should be careful around the ones with antlers. I don't want to take any chances so I'd rather have them not come into my yard.

Please send them over to my yard - there's nothing really tasty to eat but I would enjoy seeing them as part of our landscape!

What attracts them to your yard?

I think they keep coming to my yard because of all the weeds in my yard. We just moved in about 2 weeks ago and the yard was full of weeds. My neighbor has a very nice lawn and I notice that the deer never goes into their lawn..just ours. I'm planning on putting a lot of work into our yard to get it in good shape but in the mean time..I'm just trying to keep the deer out.

I bought some liquid deer/rabbit repellent at Home Depot. I don't know if it really works for deer but it's been fantastic for keeping the rabbits from eating my plants. It stinks really bad for a few hours but it has allowed me to plant flowers in the yard again. The rabbits would strip anything I planted in less than 24 hours before using the liquid fence stuff. You only have to spray every 30 days and is kid/pet friendly. Hope that helps!

City folks are funny. A buck (with a rack) is not dangerous - other than possibly carrying ticks or darting in front of your Volvo at night. Best known repelent is cheap, all natural and free - night time application suggested - Male Urine, yep, look it up and grab a six-pack.

We have a big problem of deer coming into our yard. I even tried to put old hair clippings from a barber shop around the perimeter and around some bushes they were eating (I read that sometimes works)...didn't work in the least.

While we love seeing them, they leave behind TONS of droppings in our yard which is pretty gross when the kids go out to play.

They are pretty incredible to watch up close, though (from our kitchen windows). Kind of like us being inside a zoo cage and watching them on the outside.

I can actually help with this one!
Deer repellants that you buy in the store are usually cilantro based. During the spring and summer, keep little patches of cilantro growing around your landscaping. Just incorporate it in whatever else you have growing there. They obviously find the smell rather offensive.
When cilantro is out of season, try sprinkling the dried variety from the spice aisle around your plants.

You really shouldn't worry about them hurting your children. They're VERY unlikely to approach when humans are around.

The bigger problem is the damage they can do to your precious plants.

Funny...but true!! At my old house it was a daily battle with the deer over our shrubs. A stroll first thing every morning to "claim" the shrubs and within a few days they were gone. Its a little unsightly in the winter with snow on the ground, but that kept the salesmen away as well so it was a double benefit!! :)

I am all in favor of nice racks.

Have you tried a 6-foot lattice fence? :devil2:

Red Pepper Flakes or Tabasco are natural remedies to deter deer from grazing in your yard.
