This summer (Aug 2nd, 12-5pm) the Web Committee will be sponsoring a LAN party at the Community Center. We're still working out details, but so far:

    - About 4-6 hours long
    - Free pizza!
    - We'll have a couple computers available for those without (if you need one please email us ASAP at hornerjo@yahoo.com)
    - All networking will be ready to go (wired + wireless)

    What to bring:
    - Your computer
    - A set of headphones
    - Beverage of your choice
    - Some extra pride to be used after being whipped by the 'l337' members of the Web Committee! :)
    - Whatever game we decide on

We need suggestions for games. Anyone?

Hmmm sounds like fun. If I'm free I'll be there. I think it should be a good "shootem up" kinda game where a person who never played it before can pick it up very quickly. Kinda like Doom.

I should suggest that an ethernet card might be mandatory unless Broadlands will issue them out.

We're thinking the new Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory game. It's free, so thats a major plus. Yeah, an ethernet card will be mandatory.

Should we bring monitors or CAT5? Didn't see those on the "to bring" list above.

Cat5 would probably be a good idea. I assume they'll have tables with hubs. Monitors would be a good idea but I'm going to roll in my 53" widescreen :D

Bring your monitor. We will have a few on hand for those that forget, but not many. We will have cat5 cables on hand also. Also try and bring a headset/mic combo.

And don't forget to register! We're not sure yet what the seating will be, but it will be limited. We have a flyer going out next week and spots will fill very quickly. http://hoa.broadlands.org/hoa/seminars

Are the players responsible for buying a copy of the game or can we just "share". :)

Some games require a cd key and with the new anti-cheat programs like punkbuster they only allow 1 cd key per game. This doesn't matter for LAN games just internet gaming, so if after the lan party people delete the game it wouldn't be a problem. Return to castle wolfenstein and tribes 1 does not require a cd key.

As long as we have spaces still open, bringing a friend is not a problem at all! So far we still have plenty of room.

What games seem to be the most favored right now?
I like any of the quakes, battlefield 1942, 1/2 life, UT....
If I can make it I have a 16 port full duplex switch w/uplink port I can bring. These tend to be faster than hubs because it doesnt just "broadcast". If enough space is available, I can bring my brother as well. Im still making the hard sell to the wife...[:I] , but I should know soon, then Ill register

So far in the comments (we have about 15 people so far) the 2 games leading by request are:

    Battlefield 1942 and Tribes 2.

Tribes2 has a fairly steep learning curve so anyone new will get owned pretty badly (good luck stopping me from capping :) ), but Battlefield 1942 isn't too bad at all.
So cast your vote! Here is the list:

    Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
    Medal of Honor
    Tribes 2
    Battlefield 1942
    Half Life
    Unreal Tournament
    Other?

As to equipment, the list currently is:

Computer with ethernet or 802.11b wireless
    Monitor
Headphones with microphone (we will use either Teamspeak or RogerWilco)
Cat5 cable (we should have plenty of extras, however)
The game we decide on (if someone doesn't have it they can just borrow a copy for the event)

We're thinking we should just stick with one game (two at the max) since this is the first gaming event and things are bound to go a little rocky. If all goes well we would like to do this several times a year, maybe quarterly and also give out some prizes.

Please don't forget to register. http://hoa.broadlands.org/hoa/seminars

i would vote for Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. It's a free download so no one has to worry about borrowing a copy. Also, I think a lot of new games require you to have the disk in the drive while playing. It's a great game for LAN parties because you're not just running around killing everyone, you have objectives to complete. this would be great when using Rogerwilco etc

    As a side note;

I have a 24-port switch and LOTS of cable that I'll be lending to Hornerjo for the event. Unfortunatly, I'll be at the DefCon conference over that weekend and won't be able to frag all of you...

I'll be there with my gaming laptop, er, um I mean my company-issued, productivity-enhancing, mobile PC ;) My favorite online game is Battlefield 1942. If you have not tried it then you are missing one of the most engaging fps games I have ever played. Download the demo and try it @ http://www.eagames.com/official/battlefield1942/gamedemo.jsp?state=01010 For those of you who do play BF1942, what is your favorite map? Currently my favorite is the new Battle of Britian map. It rocks. The Desert Combat mod is pretty awesome too. I also like WWII flight sims like IL2. Still waiting for LOMAC :-(

I've seen a few suggestions for what game should be played, but no definite decision. Anyone know for sure what we're playing? I think it's been suggested before and it's one of my favorites, Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory. Also, how many people have signed up so far?

My only suggestion for the game is something that has a low learning curve. Something that can take 15 minutes to learn the controls. Also maybe the organizers should choice a game and then let us know a week in advance to research the game and figure how to play it.
