We live in a townhome. The laundry is on the top level. The washer sits in a large pan which has a drain hole connected to a drain pipe.
Our pan was quite old and brittle. It was cracked and had holes in it from the washer feet. Had the washer broke, water would have ended up all over, rather than drain out through the pipe.
I bought a new pan at Home Depot for about $18. It's a worthwhile maintenance item.
