I noticed my lawn mower blade was beginning to dull. In the past I have sharpened it myself using a grinding wheel. I spoke with a couple of co-workers and they said I might want to consider paying someone to "professionally" sharpen it.

Whats a good place to get a lawnmower blade sharpened around here? I figure I'll give it a try to see if the results are that much different.

Nothing wrong with a grinding wheel or a hand file to sharpen a blade, so long as it cuts grass. Actually, a flat file or belt sander is better since they put a straight edge on it...the grinding wheel would put an arched, concave edge on it the radius of the wheel you're using.

A lot of people around here have more money than DIY handiness and would rather pay someone else to do menial around-the-house tasks than do it themselves. Save yourself some cash and take pride than you did it yourself! :)

I used a hand file to sharpen ours. It worked great.

If you are intent on having it professionally done, Chesapeake Knife and Tool at Dulles Town Center sharpens knives, I bet they would also do your blade.

Or you could try Sterling Mowers (I think that's the name of the shop). They are right across Rte. 28 on Church Road (next to the Alpine Ski something or other) on the right. Sharpening is about $6-7 and a new blade will run about $11-12. I recently purchased a new blade and it cuts the lawn like a knife through butter.

I forget the name too, but that's where I take my mower for service as well.
