Here is a little more information on the curent drought effect on Loudoun streams and how things have changed with changing land use. The last time we had a dry spell of this duration was September and October of 1985. The flow of Catoctin Creek ranged between 112 to 1.3 cfs with only two days going below 2. This year so far during these two months the flow has ranged between 2.1 and 0.12 cfs with 44 days and counting going below 2.

Clearly something has changed between 1985 and today in Loudoun County. I wonder with all the talk of "planning" put forth by the current board, they could bother to "plan" the use of our water resources.

Keep in mind that they may have an exception from LCSA, so perhaps they are not breaking the rules. I say this because we have an exception. We are allowed to water because our grass was killed, fresh topsoil was laid, then grass seed. So we're on file with LCSA as having an exception and have been told that if a sheriff shows up to have a friendly chat, we are to show him the paperwork proving that this was done. (Which is a bit amusing because all he'd have to do is take one look at the lawn and he could see that.) So anyway... maybe that's the case in your neighbor's situation.

We started out with LOVELY sod laid originally by Van Metre, had Biogreen install a sprinkler system to try and bring it back to life, but sadly Biogreen did such a crappy job we had all these spots where the sprinkler wasn't reaching, and we had all these areas of brutal broadleaf from the original sod that try as we might, our lawn looked like crud. So, what turned out to be RIGHT before the water restrictions went in place, we finally threw in the towel and had the crappy broadleaf killed, then had the new and old deadspots re-done.

I was just outside watering and I felt like I should be waving a banner that says "I'm not a fugitive! I have permission!"

Of course I realize that even though we have permission, some here will flame me for using it, and using water. I understand that.

Get ready.....there are some holier than thou posters that probably don't care if you have an exemption.

You're darn right "holier than thou". Leave the stupid seed alone and wait to water when water is available in abundance. So, let's see, if it were a choice between drinking water and grass, you would choose grass, right?

You mean people still drink water out of a tap? I thought everyone drank water out of plastic bottles with fancy names that were filled out of some guy's bathtub in Pittsburgh.

She has new SOD! If it does not take root it will DIE, not go dormant. That will cost them more $$$.

I believe in this case any resident has a right to protect their property value. This instance goes beyond simple asthetics.

Oh, and I doubt anyone will thirsty in the next several weeks.

I understand that and saw it coming. And having lived in Arizona, I'm also well aware of the fact that water is a precious resource. I was reluctant to post about the exemption because I knew I'd get flamed, but hey... I have broad shoulders and big feet. I can take it.

Funny what one can read when they actually READ!

I would still consider it "new" planting since you started from scratch and it is not just a simple over-seeding.

That's how the LCSA sees it and why they granted the exemption.

    sharse,

You might consider getting some of that landscape mulch mat and putting it down over your seed. I did that to my seed last fall and really did not need to water at all. It will also hold your seed and soil in place until we get some rain.

Some people are so "holier than thou" about "holier than thou" people.

Sharse - we've got your back on this one. Earlier today I had a lovely visit from the Sheriff, I showed him the receipts/invoices and the verbage from LCSA (as well as our exception). Also showed him our programmed watering cycle for "odd" numbered days of 2 minutes for 2 zones - which equates to 3 gallons of water from our irrigation sys.

The deputy's response was - "sorry for the trouble...thank you for the info and respecting the rules".

Lovely that nieghbors are calling in possible violations with out getting all the info.

You know...for being on water restrictions for at least two weeks now and not having rain for like a month, these yards are still looking mighty green. What's the secret (other then turn the sprinkler system on at 3am)?
