As the updated press release reports, the incident was not in Ashburn Village, but in Belmont Country Club. That means that the incident was inside the gated community. Interesting.

even though it's a "gated community", you can pretty much drive on in since there is still construction going on in there, at least at the entrance right off Glouchester.

As I've often told people - just because you live in a gated community doesn't neccesarily mean you're protected from intruders. If they want in bad enough - they'll find a way. BTW - not all the houses are inside the gate either. Friends of ours have a townhouse in Belmont, but are not inside the gate.

According to the street listing in the report, it happened inside the gated part, on a street that backs to Claiborne near Russell Branch. I didn't mean that because it was gated that it was entirely safer, just wanted to point out that it could happen anywhere, even within a supposedly guarded community.

    From the Leesburg Today:

[Updated]The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is investigating an Ashburn shooting that left a bullet lodged in between two glass windowpanes in an upstairs bathroom of a Belmont Country Club home.

The homeowner reported hearing a loud bang and the sound of glass shattering at the Interlachen Circle home, near Claiborne Parkway. Deputies responded to the call around 7:40 p.m.

A neighbor told investigators they saw two vehicles in the area and heard possible gunfire. LCSO Spokesman Kraig Troxell said investigators have "determined that the bullet most likely came from a much farther distance than originally thought.

"The bullet probably came from almost a mile away, since the bullet came in on a downward angle and didn't penetrate the second pane of glass," Troxell said. He added that the probable firing location was somewhere north of Russell Branch Parkway near Rt. 7.

Very similar to an incident 10 years ago, where a bullet from a high-powered hunting rifle ripped through the garage and crawl space of a single-family home in Ashburn Village, penetrated a bedroom wall and lodged in the back of a dresser. It was later determined that the bullet was most likely fired from the north side of Rt. 7, about a mile away.

Holy crow! I've never held a gun, don't know much about them, and certainly didn't know a bullet could fly THAT far. Amazing. And scary.

Reminds of that CSI episode where someone steps out into their yard, and is shot in the chest.

The "shooter" was something like a mile away, and shot "in the air"...
