Melted Siding, who to contact?

We are the 2nd owners of our home and we noticed today that the siding that surrounds our fireplace on the exterior of the home has melted. Obviously this can not be safe. The odd part is, we have not used our fireplace and we did not notice the melted siding on the home inspection.

The HMS home warranty does not cover this. :(

Appreciate suggestions and who to contact.

    Thanks,
    Chris

Do you have any windows that shine light directly onto the area around the fireplace?
We had a similar situation where a section of siding was warped due to sunlight being concentrated on the particular area caused by the reflection off of our windows. They put screens over the top windows to disperse the light.

I would NOT use that fireplace until I have had a professional contractor check it out. We had the same problem within the first year of moving into our house and we forced the builder (washington Homes) to fix it. They did not properly install the vent and it was indeed a safety hazzard. As a result of our complaining, they ended up making the same improvement to a handful of houses they constructed in our neighborhood (all within the first year of delivery - so, it was covered under warranty). It could also be caused by the siding not being properly installed (not enough expansion room). Direct sunlight on the siding then could cause the siding to warp, since it can't expand. I would definitely have someone check it out. Good luck!

I have that same exact thing on the house side opposite the fireplace. My brother-in-law (a contractor) who was in town to visit recently said that it is a result of the siding being installed too tight - no room given to expand. It heats up when the hot, direct summer sun hits it. Do you get summer sun directly on that portion of your house? What was in your picture did NOT resemble the problem we had with our fireplace vent when we first moved in.
