We used to go to Casa Gonzales in Leesburg for their authentic food and salsa. We disappointed they closed and searching for another good authentic Mexican food resturant. Any recommendations?

We we get desperate, we drive to Warrenton for El Agave. This is the only Mexican I like, until I can get home to Phoenix. There isn't anything else out here that is up to Phoeonix quality for me.

We loved Casa Gonzalez also. We don't particuarly care for Picante. Honestly, this area is really lacking for good Mexican food. There's a place in Sterling called Los Toltecos which isn't too bad.

My favorite is Tortilla Factory in Herndon. I think it is actually Arizona style.

For those of you willing to go outside suburbia, Oyamel in DC on 7th St is great. It is like Mexican tapas that you can share. Very authentic, but higher end I guess you could say. Mexican cuisine. A fun place, great drinks also.

DC Restaurant Week is 2/16-22 and Oyamel participates. Give it a try!

I agree that Oyamel is a great little restaurant! Guacamole made tableside too. It's also very convenient if you're going to the Verizon Center for an event.

Jess86 - I'll definitely have to give this restuarant a try. I've visited Arizona several times and totally got spoiled with their Mexican food....haven't found anyplace around here that even comes close. So if you're from Phoenix and recommend this, I'll give it a try. We just don't go out for Mexican here at all, I'll make my own instead. Warrenton isn't that far away and will totally be worth it if it's as good as you say!

El Agave is awesome. We've tried convincing the owners to open a shop up in Loudoun, but no luck yet. All this talk about Mexican food is making me hungry, may have to drive down there real soon. I can't wait to go home this summer. I'll be eating at Macayo's for every meal.

OH MY GOSH!! Macayo's is my favorite restaurant in Arizona, have eaten in the one in Tucson and Phoenix. My husband went on business in Arizona and ate there, then we we went out after that for vacations - it's the first place we always go to. They are GREAT!!! I actually order a case of their sauce to be shipped....I'll be ordering more soon as I'm almost out!!!

We usually have family bring some to us in their suitcases when they come to visit. My parents have brought tamales and mini-chimis to me too. I wish I could order some of the food and have it packed in dry ice for shipping.
I'm in the process of looking at tickets for flying home this summer and I'm trying to get a flight that gets in at lunch time, so I can hit the Macayo's near the airport. I've joked with the kids that we'll be eating just about every meal there, so Mommy can get her Mexican food fix.

I certainly don't blame you one bit!!!! As I said before - that restaurant really spoiled us. Have friends going there soon and of course have told them they HAVE to eat there!!!

Sorry to hear about Casa Gonzalez, I really liked that place. Los Toltecos in Sterling is my favorite in the area, although I hear they are moving down the street soon, and it may have happened already. I think Picante in Chantilly is pretty good and the fajitas are a massive amount of food. I know some people are going to laugh, but for the American-ized chains, Rio Grande in Reston is decent and it is almost always packed.

    I recommend El Fresco
    http://www.elfrescomexicangrill.com/
It's in Chantilly, right down Route 28. It's not a chain. The food is freshly prepared, delicious, and inexpensive. Lots of vegetarian options, too. The place is always neat and clean and the owner/ manager, who's on site, seems very interested in providing a quality experience. They offer 25% off coupons on the website, too. I just wish it were in Ashburn! Yum.

I'm not from Arizona (Virginia native), but when I did live in Warrenton I made it a habit to visit El Agave (as did my friends). Give it a try :).

I used to live in Scottsdale and ate at Macayo's occasionally. There is a hole in the wall that I can't remember the name of though, that was WAY better. It's down by the airport, maybe around 34th Street, south of Indian School... maybe even south of Thomas. It's been several years... any idea the name of the place I'm talking about?

Rio Grande at Reston Town Center is decent, but our favorite is Cactus Cantina in DC... It's excellent!!

We will have to try El Agave in Warrenton after all the positive comments here.

Try El Rancho in Purcellville. Not very well known...

I moved here from Texas and it is authentic Tex-Mex. Best that I've found in the area. The places in Leesburg are awful.
