so... if you see a habitual reckless driver in the neighborhood, I'm talking 40+ down Chickacoan and Vestals Gap, blowing stop signs, swerving around people who are turning or pulling out of a driveway- is reporting them to the HOA at all effective?

we've called the Sherriff's office to inquire about the best course of action and they did give us a number to call (I'll post THOSE results as we get a response.) But I'm wondering if good old fashioned shame might be effective- maybe if enough neighbors complain and put someone on notice that we don't appreciate them endangering us and our children, they might watch it before a tragedy ensues.

let's say, if the HOA receive 5 independent complaints about the same person, they could send a gentle warning- much like the one I got about my basketball hoop violation (LOL) to remind them of what's acceptable 'round these parts and what's not...

i'm not talking about one person organizing a petiton, or pitch forks and protests on their lawn- I just want these habitual offenders to GET A CLUE.

    any thoughts...?

PS- it's NOT a teen, or a minvan...

not an area the HOA has governance over, nor would they probably say they have the time/manpower for.

Keep reporting them to the police would be my recommendation

i'd actually be willing to field the complaints and draft the reminder letters if the HOA wanted to put a program into place... ooh- did I say that out loud...?

I share your concerns as well as your frustrations with these drivers. In SW - Claiborne “after dark” turns into a race track for drag/motorcycle racers, the 4-way stop is optional and then there’s good old Ridgeway – YIKES!

ABSOLUTELY...Call the Sheriff's office EVERY time you witness these reckless vehicular events. Non Emergency Sheriff’s #:703-777-0445 (dispatch) or 703-777-1021.

From personal experience, it takes some effort on your part….drum roll please…

Provide dispatch any/all of the following; license plate, make/model of car, driver, occupants and the direction of travel.
    1. Request a deputy to come to your house and take a statement.
    2. Make sure the deputy provides you either a case or incident #.
    3. Go to the Magistrate’s and provide the incident/case #.
    4. *Caveat* depending on the situation – the Magistrate will issue a summons to driver.
These steps allowed me to confront a drive (in Court) who habitually ignored the 4-way stop & repeatedly engage in high speed racing on Claiborne. I won’t share the monetary fine or the points the judge levied on this driver. However the judge reminded this driver that “driving in the Commonwealth of Virginia is a privilege not a right”.

I haven’t seen this driver ignore the 4-way stop nor racing on Claiborne, I hope this helps.

Thanks - this is a great idea, even more so since it actually ended with a result.

NO! PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS. WE'RE NOT GOING THROUGH THAT ISSUE AGAIN.

Without any concrete proof, it all becomes a "he said/she said" situation. Last thing we want is for folks to use these forums as a means of 'pointing the finger' at other people, who then have to come here and defend themselves to the masses, without any proof, etc.
If you have issues with speeders on a particular road in Broadlands, let the sheriff's office know about it. You can also drop a quick note to one of the Resident Members on the HOA board, who can then take the information to the Board and have the HOA contact the authorities requesting them to patrol that area more often. Doesn't guarantee that it will solve the problem, but the sheriff's office does listen...

This is a law enforcement issue. Let the sheriff's dept. handle it. Not the HOA.

i would never even consider posting a neighbors plate here- why create a negative vibe? the goal is to stop the speeding and make them care about the consequence of their actions, not punish them publicly...

If you go to the website of the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office, there is a place for requesting traffic enforcement. While they are busy, I am sure they make an effort to respond to every reasonable complaint.

As a follow-up to the suggestion that you call LCSO dispatch for every reckless driver, keep in mind the basic criteria for a reckless driver:
    1. 45 miles per hour or higher in a 25 mile per hour zone, or
    2. Drive in a manner that endangers the life, limb, or property of another.

**I am not an attorney, this is just general guidance and not legal advice -- there are other specific situations that could justify a reckless driving charge**

As for pursuing charges on your own, it is not something I would do as a homeowner, but kudos to anyone who does it -- this shows a strong personal commitment to your community. The reason I would not pursue charges on my own is that many defendants do are not responsible and punctual, and the complainant on the charge has as much responsibility to be in court as the defendant. As a result, you may end up in court on multiple dates because the defendant can't get his act together, and you end up missing a lot of work. (Not to mention potential neighborhood rivalry issues.) Everyone needs to make their own decision, but my suggestion is to request increased enforcement and leave it to the professionals.

Nobody has mentioned the most sensible solution. Homeowner-deployed spike strips ;)

I thought of that, but then if it happened I didn't want everyone to assume it was me :)

Too bad they don't have the opposite of this. A way to request cops not waste time enforcing speed limits in places like waxpool in front of MCI / Worldcom / Verizon. Or what would be really nice is a place to notify the county of ridiculously bad speed limits. 40 - 45 MPH on claiborne, but Ashburn Village is 35.

Also I'm not sure what the cop sitting at the light at waxpool and LCP is for. I see people run the red (way past "orange") and the cop is dozing away. If your gonna sit and ding people, please do it.

Of course, I've had people tell me to slow down when I'm doing 15-20 in a 25 MPH zone, so remember it can be tough to accurately judge speeds.

I'm convinced all speed limits here are stupid.

You go drive through an area out of the suburbs.. and the speed limit will be 45mph-50mph on a road with no shoulders.. houses directly on the road.. 2 lanes.. and really no limited access to the road.

Move here.. you have 4 lane roads.. with curbs.. medians.. no houses on the road... and you have speed limits of 35mph.
