Amen! I actually did send a note to the Sheriff about this one, asking them to redeploy to any of the roads in Broadlands (Claiborne, DeMott, etc.). You could go 65 on that stretch in front of MCI and be safe. Oy.

Lots of times when cops are just sitting there they are checking for expired tags and stickers.

They like to do this in traffic since it's easier to read the tags.

Similar to when the state troopers stand at the toll booth exits.

There's nowhere to turn around or make a detour to avoid them.

Can you imagine what would happen if every person reported just one speeder on the Greenway in the morning? The amount of steel barreling down that road at high velocity in the morning reminds me of something being shot out of a rail gun.

I really don't see too much speeding in the Broadlands community, though. A few people, that's it. I am perplexed by the "Kids Playing" signs that end up in the middle of residential streets from time to time. Is is allowable for private citizens to block a state road (our part of the community is in state control).

    children playing signs

I don't think I've seen those? Are these movable signs that people actual put in the middle of the road?

Yes, some are neon green and shaped like a little kid. Some come with orange flags too.

sit on Chickacoan for 10 minutes and you will see people racing a 1/4 mile from stop sign to stop sign- it's ludricous. i LIKe those kids playing signs- they shouldn't be in the middle of the street but many people need a reminder that little unpredictable kids play along all of the streets in the neighborhood.

i've seen some pretty inattentive parents as well letting toddlers play right along the curb- it makes me NUTS. my kid is eight and I STILL don't let him cross the street without my eyes on him. yeah he hates it but too bad for him- i'm not leaving his safety up to people on cell phones barreling down the road. it's bad enough when visitors do it but for people who LIVE here to fly down the street?!? come ON people!!!

Broadlands Live Friday night- BE THERE!!!!

    T8erman,

Those are the ones I've seen! I don't have any problem with folks protecting their kids, but I would suggest that you can better protect them by keeping them out of the streets. Putting what amounts to a traffic sign in the middle of a state road is not the right move.

I sure as heck would imagine that those who use those signs would have an issue with me putting a sign in the middle of the road that says, "Keep Your Kids Out of the Road."

    redon1,

I am sorry about that, and it is sad you have to put up with it. The fuzz should definitely get on that.

LMAO!! i would be 200% behind that kind of sign too! my husband has actually stopped a 2 year old from running into the street in front of a car while his mother's back was turned. then she had the nerve to yell at the TWO YEAR OLD- "don't EVER let me see you run in front of a car again!" yeah- she didn't even see it THAT time... lol

I think I saw the same "cop" you're referring to. If you're referring to the brown cruiser with red/yellow lights on the roof, he's an Auxiliary of the Sheriff's Office, and I don't think they write traffic tickets; he's probably there in case there's a need for traffic control.

redone1, if I decide to have one made, I'll gladly loan it to you. :D Kudos to your husband for being a good Samaritan even if the mother did not realize it was her fault. With some of the careless parents around here, I'm shocked (but happy) that there are not more tragedies.

Careless parents aside... We live in a community of tightly grouped homes with ALOT of children running around (that is what kids do!). I for one would NOT HESITATE to confront said driver and express my feelings.

    Agree.

And if you remember, we did that very thing one night last summer, when all of our neighbors were out having a cold beverage of choice on Friday evening and all of the kids (15 school age kids on our street alone) were playing and riding bikes etc.

Some jerk came down the street at 35-40 mph....

    1. You still pay to use the Greedway?

    2. The kids playing signs are no different than other cautionary traffic signs...they alert the driver that children may be playing near the sign, and drivers should use extra caution (i.e., hang up the cell and just call in your order for Shrimp Imperial from Asia Cafe once you get home) in these areas.

    Maybe I posted this before;

We rent a plain, white Ford. Find someone in the community who is rather tall and has a fairly short haircut. Give him dark glasses, a brown or grey shirt and a hair dyer.

Park all on the side of the road.

    Watch the comic hi-jinks ensue.

Yes, and apparently the whole state of West Virginia does, too. :(

I agree that they could theoretically serve as a good heads up. However, do you really think an idiot driving 45 mph on a residential street in our community is going to see one of those signs and turn into a good driver. If so, you have a lot of faith in bad drivers.

Also, I still question whether private citizens can place traffic signs in the middle of a state road. Does anyone know if that is permissible. If so, I may have to get a sign of my own: "Please drive slowly. Careless parents neglecting their kids nearby."
