I'd be more concerned about desensitizing drivers to kids playing by the roadside. By putting these lifelike posters out, its just a matter of time until people go "oh its just those stupid fake kids... <accident>"

What surprises me most here, and no one has brought this up:

What qualifies you to judge the speed of a moving vehicle?

This is an extremely difficult task to do with any degree of accuracy. Other senses get involved and screw our thoughts. A loud car sounds like it goes faster. Same with a sporty car. Not saying people are not speeding but I doubt anyone here is qualified to make such speed decrees. It is even difficult for trained officers to make non technology based speeding tickets stick.

Now if you happen to have a radar gun or LIDAR, feel free to post, otherwise please focus on allowing your children to play randomly on public roads.

you don't have to have a radar gun to tell someone is going too fast residential street. i'm not talking about 30 mph- i'm talking excessive speed, jamming on brakes to barely roll to a stop, swerving around people backing out of a driveway.

In theory, its the person doing the backing out that would be at fault here but IANAL. I could see having to swerve around someone if they don't bother to check the street for traffic and I can either swerve or get hit.

I've also had people tell me to slow down in a 25 MPH zone when I was doing 15-20 because they threw their kids stroller into the middle of the street in between cars without looking. So it is very difficult to judge speeds, especially when you have a vested interest in one direction or the other (pedestrian vs. vehicle operator).

If you are doing the speed limit.. you could stop before having to swerve around any person blinding backing up. Continuing to swerve around them says

    - I'm in too much of a hurry
    or
    - I'm going too fast to stop

again my whole point is the RECKLESS speeders- i'm not looking to argue about 15-30 mph, or who has the right of way, or careless pedestrians. i'm not sure why there is resistance from people who LIVE here- if it's your kid that is mowed down are you going to sit here and say "well the car DID have the right of way..." NO- would say if that idiot wasn't barreling down the road he would have had time to stop."

i don't expect my kid to make smart decisions on the road- that's why i supervise and brainwash him as much a s possible. i DO expect adults to drive with EXTRA, EXTREME care since kids make mistakes and some parents don't supervise their kids well.

On our street, random play by children is not permitted. It is generally a well-orchestrated event.

We used to make them play ball and ride bikes in the various garages...

no random play on public roads... we are fortunate enough to live in a cul de sac far enough off of the straightaways where speeders offend, but i'd like to feel like if he WAS riding his bike on the main road- not randomly playing on a public road- but just doing what kids do- he isn't risking his life because it's acceptable to speed in the neighborhood.

but- i DO wish more kids would play their back yards instead of in driveways and front yards along the main road. bottom line is still THE SPEEDING SHOULD STOP.

Where I live, the road (Glebe View) has become quite busy since we first moved in as Broadlands Boulevard was opened and the Safeway and LCPS admin building were constructed. We have a lot of cut through traffic and much of it is speeders.

I do look when backing out of my driveway, first across the street since Van Metre built our across the street neighbors driveway DIRECTLY across from ours, then right, then left, and then right again since traffic from the right would hit me first should there be an accident. I can't tell you how many times I've had to throw on my brakes when backing out because between the time I looked right the second time and all is clear, continuing to look to the right, that someone comes speeding around the curve and down the hill.

I've also had two guests who parked in front of my house on the street who have had their cars hit by people not paying attention as they sped around the curve and down the hill.

My kids are not allowed to play out front and may only use chalk in the driveway or be on the front porch with adult supervision. And that stinks - kids should be able to enjoy their front yard and get to know the neighbor kids. But it simply is not safe - not because of sex predators but because people can't take an extra minute to get to their destination.
