I've seen that plane, the Antanov 125 cargo plane, and they are loud, however that little prop plane has a high pitch resonance that is annoying, not loud. It's kinda like a clock that ticks, not loud, but sustained.

And what would that official stance be? Like they said, you knew you moved near an airport...

Well, my name is on that list, as are some of my neighbors. Are you saying that the list is invalid, with no proof? And why is that comment on this thread, which has nothing to do with the hospital issue? Are you just using any forum to smear people who don't agree with your opinion?

    Cobymom-
I was responding to another post. Pointing out a fact that is in print on this forum for anyone to see is not a smear. It's a simple fact.
Sorry, Chsalas. I am done here.

Let's see........A new runway at Dulles means they might be flying in more medical patients. Hey! Maybe we need another hospital near Dulles! What do you all think?!?!?!? :devil2:

no chance, not since they will probably put in the Helo Pad about 2 years after they build the hospital. Wait and see.

Holy god....I think a 777 just went right over the top of my house. (Marsh Creek) I swear I could have hit it with a slingshot. I have to assume that was the new runway.

Cliff - Do you have a way to verify?

Your best bet would be to file a complaint with the FAA:

Last night the jet engine noise was, by far, the worst I've experienced since the new runway opened. I have lived near "runways" for 35 years! (USAF) and it's never come close to being this bad! I will definitely file a complaint with the FAA...thank you merky1 for providing the information.

Just be aware that weather has a lot to do with the noise.

Last night we had an overcast. This reflects the sound and makes jet noises seem louder than they would be under clear skies.

Yes, the atmosphere impacts the level of noise, however, the decibel level last night probably exceeded the maximum allowable limit imposed by the FAA.

We also saw and heard the takeoff around 10 something last night. I agree, it was the noisiest, scariest and closest we've seen since we've lived here, and we also have always lived close to airports. I hope it won't be that way last night. Even with the weather being a factor, I just can't believe how low it was, that they allow flights to takeoff that low over a suburban area like this.

Why don't you wait to see if it happens more than once before complaining? Hopefully it was just a transient issue and won't happen again! That being said, I didn't hear anything.. =)

In looking at the layout of the runways, it is my guess weather did play a part last night, but not only the overcast skies. I am definitely not a pilot, but it is my understanding that planes almost always take off and land into the wind. On most of my flights in and out of Dulles they utilize the N/S facing runways, which would include the new ones. Given the weather last night (and what I believe was a strong wind from the west) I would guess they were forced to use the 12/30 runways that face WNW/ESE (almost directly at the Broadlands) because the crosswinds exceeded those allowed for most aircraft. As Ozgood mentioned, these would be our biggest concern given their orientation. I say "forced" to use 12/30 because they have much more volume in the N/S facing direction and the reduction in volume may have caused delays and other complications on one of the busiest travel nights of the year. That said, if you feel the noise exceeds FAA regs, feel free to complain and please keep us posted on what they say.

And I was fully aware of the airport near Broadlands, but I was also aware of the above and specifically avoided areas directly north and south. With all of the airports in DC area it is hard to escape aircraft noise of some sort, but there is a big difference between circling aircraft and those that just left the ground.

They have not yet used the new runway for departures, so that was not the cause.

You can also call the Dulles Airport Noise Complaint telephone service:

    If You Have a Concern
A 24-hour Noise Complaint Telephone Center operates at Dulles's Operations Office. This gives citizens a way to voice their concerns over aircraft noise. The telephone number is 703-572-8215. Usually a duty officer will speak with the caller personally, but if that person is not available, the Center's voicemail will record the complaint. The Manager of the Authority's Noise Abatement Office is also available to discuss noise concerns.

I'm going to call. Thought a train was coming through the house last night.

The only plane I ever hear in the area is a C-130 that buzzes around every now and then...but I am a little more tuned to listen to planes like that.
