I have a year 2000 Washington Homes SF Home, and I am attempting to add a fan kit to my gas fireplace to put more heat into the room. I need an outlet in the control panel to operate this fan, and one was not installed by the Builder. The fireplace manufacturer (Heatilator), maintains that one should have been installed as part of the standard fireplace installation.
Am I to assume that I am solely responsible now for the outlet installation, or should the builder (now known as Hovnanian sp?) be responsible for the electric installation?
If anyone has run into this issue, or any recommendations on how to deal with the builder 7 years after we moved in, or any electricians that can do this type of work, please reply or let me know.
    Thanks for any insight...

TigerFan... just my humble opinion and I am not qualified to answer of course, but think about it. 7 years? How can this be a builder issue that they would fix now? In theory, it passed inspection numerous times, including the county. If one was required, then the inspection process should have caught it.

Unless it is a health and safety violation, I can not imagine what recourse you would have with the builder. I am not trying to talk you out of it, just offering another opinion based upon what you wrote.

If you are skilled enough to add the kit yourself, do you know how to run the outlet yourself? How does your fireplace turn on? Is there a switch on the wall?

Sorry not to be more helpful...

We're talking about Natural Gas and Electricity here. My suggestion, get it done by a professional; I wouldn't attempt this on my own, as simple as it is/can be.

I should have never mentioned the builder because the replies got off track, and I will not be able to do this myself. So back to my original question.
Has anyone had an electrical outlet installed in their gas fireplace for a fan to be installed? If so, who did it and how much?
    Thanks

We purchased a blower kit and remote for our Heat 'N Glow Peninsula Fireplace from:
    Fireplace Solutions Inc.
    14088 A Sullyfield Circle
    Chantilly, VA 20151
    (703) 961-0212 - Phone

We had an electrician install the outlet in the fireplace and a junction box (not sure if I'm using the correct term) below the fireplace in the basement ceiling (prior to the basement being finished). We were charged an hours fee by the electrician as it was not a big job.

I had the same issue and did it myself because I'm cheap....

What I did was take the base moulding off (because I just got done installing wood floors) and branched off an outlet that is about 4' from the fireplace.... I ran new romex from the outlet down to the floor and ran it in the gap between the drywall and the floor and into the fireplace (installed nail plates so that if someone tries to nail around there, it won't go into the romex). The fireplace already had an outlet, but it wasn't hooked up, so I just hooked up to that and installed the kit. We use X-10 to turn the fan on and off..... it works a TON better with a fan in the winter! We have to use another fan in the room to circulate the air because it just collects at the ceiling.

Do you happen to know the name or number of the electrician? Thanks, I hope to do the same.

The electrician we used moved out of the area some time ago.
