OK, so I'm reading a lot of stories in various locations about Openband in Broadlands South. I'm getting concerned about how this will affect home values in the North. 100MBs? - I'm really annoyed that we are left out. Has Openband responded with any information about their interest in wireless for the North? On the surface, this really seems like it would be the way we go. Don't we want to be included in any Internet plans for the rest of Broadlands? Plus, we would have a unified interest. I read that the President of Openband is Max Kipfer - wasn't he the President of Loudoun Cablevision when it was sold to Adelphia???

Don't be annoyed... Broadlands North was just started at a time when doing something like OpenBand (fiber to the home) was, well, just not able to be done. We're working with several providers for options for the North. Drop by the next web committee meeting if you want to know more. Hopefully we will have something in by the April-May timeframe.

I recently bought a Van Metre home in Southern Walk. The reason they can accomplish this is because of the new homes/construction in that area. I currently live in the Engle townhomes and have been begging for any sort of broadband since I moved there in 1999.

Openband is building a Central Office (CO) there so we can have high-speed access. The reason the Northern Broadlands doesn't have this is b/c we are located to far (distance) from the nearest CO and the provider will not guarantee anything if you are farther than a certain distance from the CO. Openband is providing fiber optic to the doorstep, with a dedicated CO. They are going to bundle telephone, cable and Internet all via the same fiber optic feed. Unfortunately, this isn't an option for already established houses/neighborhoods.

I realize the fiber situation. What I am asking is, "Does OpenBand have any interest in managing our Fixed Wireless solution, including us "under their umbrella", and does it make sense for us to explore that as an option?"

I do not see how they could manage this service as they are in a different market space. Meaning, I do not think they are in the arena of managing wireless services. Their business model is a converged services provider, offering broadband communications packages with bundled phone, cable and Internet.

That would be a good question to pose to them...

I think SpongeBob has a point here. I won't be able to make the meeting so this is a good forum to get my view out there.

The wireless option is great! (Thank you!!!!) But has anyone explored getting a CO in the north. I just buit my Engle Townhome this year in the last section with the Bell Atlantic wiring package and I can't use it.

Obviously my site was not developed when Openband was not available. I understand the whole CO thing. The village is suffering from the same problem. I hope that the HOA puts some pressure on Bell or Openband to put in more COs in the future. I think this does affect property values in a small way but you wouldn't know it from the last assessment ;)

We did explore getting a CO in the north around when we started, but found out a few things that threw it for a loop:

    1. Verizon would have to deploy several remote DSLAMS in order to serve the entire Broadlands.
    2. Verizon had no interest in doing #1 (due to costs and other things).

So, well, the Verizon solution didn't get very far at all. Perhaps in the future they will see that DSL would be very attractive here. For now we have Adelphia 2-way and soon(tm) a much better wireless solution.
