    ADMINISTRATOR NOTE:
(Posts from original trash service thread related to Patriot have been moved here)

Information from the newsletters and FAQ from this thread have been summarized in the Trash Removal Service Changes for 2009 - Info and FAQ thread for easy viewing.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, I guess we're getting another trash service! That's 3 in four years. I have a question about the NV garbage cans. What do they do with them? It seems like ours in pretty good shape (you know weekly washing and de-odorizing, bi-weekly waxing and so on). But will the next customer want a used garbage cans? Wouldn't it be easier and more environmentally friendly to simply place a "new trash service" sticker over the NV printing?

What do they do with all the old garbage cans?

    Re: New Trash Service

I believe New Vision will sell them to a recycler who will chip the material for re-use. NV purchased them, they will not just be giving them away to the new trash company. We have only had two trash companies since the inception of Broadlands...AAA and New Vision.

Maureen - I suggest if the HOA office has news and details about the new service that we create a new thread with all the pertinent details rather then burying them here. I can edit the threads to make the new one sticky, etc. I assume there was something in the newsletter, but with the various bits that have been coming out in little spurts on the forum, it would be helpful to centralize it all in a 'need to know' type thread.

Steve, I agree; I was just thinking about that. Having all this in the 'old' thread could cause some confusion if folks start reading back stuff that was only relevant during the transition to New Vision, etc.

I say we start a new thread regardless; I can almost guarantee there will be discussions here on the forums once we start the actual transition to Patriot...

Of course, we could have stayed with AAA and all of their associated problems and you'd be paying about $8/month more in your HOA fees.

Your right Cliff. From time to time i'd hop on the thread, and then realize I was looking at very old information-which had nothing to do with the current service. Isn't there a way for the site manager to delete the older posts to make it more relavant, rather than start a new one?

    Re: New Trash Service

I don't know if their is a new thread about Patriot or not. But I'd like to know why these services use such huge garbage cans and only give you a small recycling bin. And why do they pick up trash twice a week but recycling only once per week?

It should be the other way around with a large recycling bin and a smaller garbage can. Our recycling bin is always overflowing and we barely produce 1 kitchen size bag of garbage once or twice per week. Hopefully people are recycling everything they're can.

How about at least picking up recycling twice a week? And give us smaller trash cans. Our garages aren't big enough to store these rediculously large cans. Most people can't get a car in their garage as it is.

    Rant over. Sorry :)

    Re: New Trash Service

Simple really.....On my street of about 25 homes, only a half dozen or so have recycle bins out each week. Many, however, have overflowing trash twice a week.
Patriot will be offering larger recycle bins.

It doesn't sound like people on your street are recycling all they can. And that's really too bad.

Will Patriot also offer smaller trash cans?

    Re: New Trash Service

Or, put a section on the actual Broadlands HOA site dedicated to things like trash service and other "static" information. Forum threads can get "dated" and it is difficult to determine which threads are "official" and which ones are anectdotal.

    Re: New Trash Service

I suppose if you don't need a large one, you may have to get a smaller one yourself. I know some people can't store a lot of their belongings in certain houses, or weed out what they don't need so they cannot park cars, or the cars are too wide/tall to get them in.

Some ideas here: We bought ceiling mounted bike pulleys so all three bikes are up above the cars toward the back of the garage. The kids never had a problem getting them down. We don't keep our basement door on, so the cats can use the litter box. That is on top of two sawhorses bought at HD and our snowblower and other items are under it, the lawnmower and other items above. This is up against the back of the garage. On each side of the garage we have a big metal shelf rack high up to hold the coolers and other bigs items. then we have a tool rack on the left side to hang rakes and such.

The trash bin and 2 recycling bins are right up against the back of the garage. This allows two long cars and a freezer (to the right of the stairs) in the garage with no problem. Kaos' car is outside as son's car is inside - oh yeah with the motorcylce in front of it, no less.

Going verticle in the garage is a good way to use up a lot of wasted space :)

This is off topic but a neighbor of mine built a loft that hangs from the ceiling in his garage. The front part of his big SUV fits under it.

    Re: New Trash Service

It's very sad to see the number of people who DON'T recycle :conf2:. We see it around us all the time and what really gets us is after xmas when all the cardboard boxes are out on Monday rather than keeping them 3 more days. We have 3 recycling bins that are always overflowing when they go out weekly. Trash could go out once every 2-3 weeks. Even less once I get my composting bin.

The great thing I read about Patriot is that they are striving to make it easier for folks to recycle and will give us extra bins for free and will be taking more recyclables than NV did. Now if only we could educate more of our neighbors!

    Re: New Trash Service

As my grandpa would say, "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink". It amazes me that so many people don't recycle. But it also amazes me that even with 'free' poop bags and trash cans so many dog owners still refuse to pick up after their dogs.:screwy:

Maybe a friendly reminder of the different materials that are recycleable in every Broadlands newsletter would help.

    Re: New Trash Service

Recycling here is so much easier too...in WNY, where I still have family - they have to take off ALL the labels from jars, cans, etc. AND then take them to the grocery store to recycle. So - it's pretty easy here and no excuse for people not doing it. As far as dogs go...never could understand why people who walk their dogs don't take a few bags with them and put them in their pocket. It should be automatic.

    Re: New Trash Service

Well, our recycling bin went missing yesterday (has the address on it). Searched the nearby woods - nothing. Is it possible they were being picked up early?

As for the neighbors that need "educating" about recycling, I say you're not giving them enough credit. They're not clueless, they're just lazy. Same as the dog owner that doesn't clean up after their pooch. Behavior like that cannot be changed until recycling becomes mandatory or enforced by rules, fines, etc.

    Re: New Trash Service

All I'm reading in the newsletter is that the new trash service pickup starts April 2, and that old bins will be collected "the week of March 30." Is there a reason they delivered the new bins so early? Us "townies" barely have room in our townhouse garages for cars, much less numerous bins awaiting a swapout. Does anyone know anything more specific than "week of March 30" for the swap?
