I see the summerbrooke pool parking lot has a collection of New Visions Trashcans today.. looks like NV is using the lot as a holding facility. Could folks drop them off there, instead of trashing them?

That's just what I did yesterday...I got tired of waiting for NV to pick up my can/bin.

Just a reminder...Please put your trash out by 7:00 am. That is when Patriot starts collecting. They may not be using the same route that New Visions used and their routes may vary as their drivers become more familiar with our neighborhood. Trash and recycles can be put out as early as 6 pm the evening before pick up. Please besure all trash and recyclables are secured.

We have our yard waste in bio degradable plastic bags. they were not picked up on monday. Hubby left out for pickup today. no go! i reread the rules and it says they will pick up in bio deragable, but no plastic. we used the paper in the past, but they don't secure and knock over easily, then you got yard waste all over the street. in the meantime, what do i do with the bags that are out there now? i need help, please.

Unfortunately, there is no way for the folks that are doing the collecting to distinguish plastic that is bio-degradeable, so, I would suggest that you transfer the contents of the bags to paper bags or use a separate trash can and put it out on Monday. You can call Patriot at (703) 257-7100 to see if there are any other options.

Aren't the bio-degradeable bags blue? If they still are then that alone separates them from regular trash bags that are mostly (exclusively???) white and black.

We had been on vacation during spring break and had a lot of trash for Monday. Got it out early in the morning, all the other cans in the neighborhood were still out and full. They came and went without taking our trash. When my wife called they said they would be back Thursday. Yesterday it looked like they had not taken a neighbors recycling. Not the best start for Patriot.

They skipped our regular trash yesterday. We assumed it was because we only had a few bags in the can. All others on our street seemed to be taken.

Hopefully just beginning basic mistakes that will be taken care of soon.

A neighbor (2 times) put garbage out AFTER Patriot picked up. I guarantee he called them and told them the crew missed his garbage. The truck returned an hour later. I wonder how often this happening?

I got my large recycle bin right away and I love it. Patriot recycles a long list of stuff. Boxes, papers, plastic, cans, bottles fills up our recycle bin very quickly. No overflow, or flying around trash is a good thing on the street.

I hope that people would be recycling more regardless of what is the motivation. We got nothing to lose. Regardless of the process being perfect or not, if it gets recycled great, if not, it all goes to the same place anyway.

    Thanks for recycling.

You can put paper and boxes in with the plastic & cans? We've been doing them separately but it would be easier to be able to do them together.

Our family of five is generating 2-3 bags of garbage a week, a couple of plastic bins of plastics/cans, a bin of cardboard and a bin of newspapers. I'd like to have a garbage can the size of the recycle bin and a recycle bin the size of the garbage can.

Not sure. I know I missed New Visions a couple of times because they came pretty early. Patriot has been running later, early afternoon vs early morning.

It would be nice if everyone's garbage/recycled ration was like this. I am not quite up to that level but we are trying.

A bigger recycle bin would be nice though:) and one with a lid even nicer

We started using 3 bins (paper/mags, plastic & cans) for our recylcing last week. Patriot was nice enough to restack them for us after they picked up the contents.

Better yet, instead of being thrilled that you can fill up your recycling bin why not reduce the items that require recycling?

Well, we all know the process is not perfect and quite expensive so if the possiblilty exists that "recyclables" are being tossed into the dump why not, as a consumer, lessen the impact on the environment by producing less?

And, does anyone know the actual percent of recyclables really do get recycled.

Patriot offers 64 gallon recycle toters. We used to have 5 OVERFLOWING recycle bins and now fill this toter up (we still have separate bags/boxes for junk mail/newspapers). I really wish we'd only have 1 trash day and 2 recycling days.

And what we LOVE about Patriot is that we can throw our food scraps in the yard-waste bags for composting. Plus, they leave yard waste that is not in the proper bags. Two neighbors threw grass clippings in regular plastic bags which the trash guys ignored. I don't always support forced actions, but this method will teach some people how their actions can affect our environment.

Or you will get folks who won't conform and just put grass clippings, yard waste into the trash can and not worry about recycling.

The fact that you can fill your bins to overflowing speaks volumes about you as a consumer, the waste you create, and the impact you have on the environment. I wouldn't be so quick to proclaim that my large recycling toter is "overflowing" so therefore I'm being a "good citizen" and recycling. The idea is less waste and refuse all around. I think consumers need to demand products with less packaging that's more eco-friendly and not something housed in plastic that I can just toss away when empty.
