I think that may sound a bit harsher than you intend...

Still, you are correct that the full circle is reduce, reuse and recycle. I try hard to buy things that don't have a bunch of hard plastic wrapped around some tiny thing (like a little portable jump drive that is packaged to be 4 sizes bigger than it actually is). It can be difficult but I try to do that.

I also try to reuse things. Even the tissue paper that covers our dry cleaned items (yeah, I know dry cleaning isn't good for the enviro but hubby has his suits) I reuse for gift bags. I've been collecting the yogurt cups and when I have enough of them I'll send them to a place for recycling.

I'd be happy to read a list of ideas for reusing other items as well but haven't done a google search in a while to find them.

I wish you could help me with that. I am so tired of those huge packages for such a little object. And they are so hard to cut open even with my EMT weapons of destruction! :nono:

I wish I could find manufacturers who use more friendly packaging. I would gladly do business with them.

I thought I heard around Christmas time that Sony was not going to use clamshell packaging anymore and that Amazon was going to try to use more cardboard.

It isn't something I can do often but given two choices similar in price and function I would choose the one with the least packaging. The Tide bleach pens, for example, come packaged in plastic and are way bigger than the pen itself. I suppose they need some room for product description and warnings but it still is way overpackaged for my taste.

If you shop on Amazon, look for products that are available with "Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging"

Not try to sound like an A..!, but you do realize the packaging for the smaller items is in place to prevent theft? It gives them more room to place the security sensors. What I hate is the packaging for Barbies, action figures etc with all the little wire ties, plastics pieces tape. I would love to see that changed.

    Enjoy!

So is the homeowners association going to spring for the bags we are supposed to use for grass clippings?????? Seems like recycling is a bit like a boat - just a large whole into which you throw money....

You can buy the large yard waste recycling bags made for that purpose at Giant or other grocery stores.

you do realize that the trash company can not take lawn waste in non recyclable bags or they get fined - thus our fees go up. If you do not want to buy recyclable bags then just get yourself another trash container or one of those large plastic containers so they can just dump it in the back of their truck.

Since it is a county rule that has banned plastic bags for yard waste in landfills, you can ask them to buy your bags.
I just use a wheeled plastic garbage can for my yard waste. Bought it 7 years ago for $16.00.

If you choose to use the biodegradable lawn refuse bags - recommend Home Depot's as they are more durable and moisture resistant than the grocery store brand which holds up like a paper sack. The cost is about $2 for 5.

If the cost of the lawn refuse bags or separate can is too much, use a mulching lawnmower and don't bag when you cut your grass. Mulching mowers are good for your lawn, too.

I alone do not make a lot of waste, but you add 3 growing children and a spouse to the mix, and together we do create waste. However, we do as much R, R, R as we possibly can.......it is ingrained in my 3 children's heads. And we do a lot more R, R, R than many, many other people around us just based on viewing trash cans and household items/toys out on the street. Unfortunately until they start delivering milk in re-usable glass jars again, the containers have to go somewhere when you are consuming about a gallon of milk a day. And the restaurants around here really aren't too friendly about packing up your food or drinks in containers you provide. Even Costco got snarky with me today when I refused boxes for my purchased items. Given that we can't control a great deal of the packaging, we recycle it vs tossing it in the trash. As we are given opportunities to make less waste, we take advantage of that opportunity. We as a family of 5 do the best we can.

Apparently Patriot does not recycle cardboard boxes. I worked from home today and notice that the recycling truck ignored everyone's cardboard that was placed next to their recycling container, including ours. Then an hour later the garbage truck came by and threw it all in with the regular garbage.

At least New Vision made it appear they were recycling.

Patriot does recycle cardboard. Please give me your location so I can discuss this with the owner of Patriot. He is trying very hard to be proactive. If his employees have made an error he wants to know so that it can be addressed.

Our cardboard and recycling have been picked up (I did not notice if it was the same truck) but our trash is still here.
