I picked up a flyer about the phantom screen door at Lowes this weekend and I am wondering if anyone has either installed or currently has a Phantom Screen Door?

I'm sorry - I had to admit at first reading this thread begged all sorts of interesting come-backs:

I you BELIEVE the door is there, bugs will stay out?

Does it make ghostly noises at midnight?

    etc....

However, having seent he website - that looks darned cool! Please! Post your experiences & findings - um... ghostly or otherwise. :D

They look pretty neat. Do you think they would work for the sliding door that ALWAYS comes off the track or gets stuck on the track, etc.? If someone has one, please post.

I'm not sure but I'll do some more digging and let you know.
I had come across the Phantom Door product a few weeks ago and then I went to Lowes to see the real thing over the weekend. I was really impressed with the quality of the materials (especially the screening) and the easy installation.
Both of us are on the 0-1 skill level for home improvements - the Phantom Door only requires a level and a screw driver.

As soon as they are installed I will post my opinions and pictures here.

For what it's worth, we've replaced our deck's screen door 3 times, and the quality of the door is totally at the mercy of the framing itself. In our case, over the years, the door framing isn't as 'square' as it was when the house was first built (house settles over the years, things shift, etc). I would be curious to see if these doors have a better mechanism to deal with situations like this, as opposed to the normal 'wheels on springs' solutions so many other manufacturers use...

Let us know how it goes!

Yep they sure look nice. We couldn't believe that in this price range, VM did not install true double opening French doors, so we had them removed and replaced with in-swing doors, that have two screens. Admittedly they both can be removed easily, but the phantom screen would be nice. We've had front door screens before, and thought about it with this house, but being on Ridgeway, we don't need all that noise and dirt coming in the house.

Funny thing was VM's back door opening was NOT standard so they had to make the transom half the normal size in width and the whole unit 3-4 inches taller than normal. The installers had to put 4-inch moulding around the new door to cover the gap!

On another note: VM still can't manage to do floating glass shower doors! Something else that should be in these price homes! Sure would make it easier to clean and less of a catch all for mold.

That is the reason that we discovered the Phantom Door product. Our back/patio door is NOT standard too (VM). Several contractors came in with sky high prices for installing a "traditional" screen/storm door.

Imagine how happy I was when I discovered the phantom door cost less than $200 - and it is easy to install (or at least we will find out this weekend)

I couldn't believe that in this price range VM did not install decent CARPET. But I digress...

Lowes quoted me over $300 for a Phantom screen to cover the sliding door. They said the company has to come out to install. ? And, it comes with a lifetime warranty. Sounds high. Won't be getting one any time soon.

Did you go to the Lowes in Sterling...if so we paid $190 (not including taxes) for s 28-44" door (I believe there are 3 sizes for the door) and Lowes stated that they could install it, but after reading the instructions it seems pretty easy so we opted to install it ourselves.

I called Phantom today to ensure if we installed the door, the lifetime warranty will still be valid and yes the warranty is valid if the "homeowner"
    self installs their product.

As luck would have it - we didnt have a chance to install the door this weekend (too many other chores and too little time)

Glad you checked on the warranty. The guy at Lowes (yes, Sterling) made it seem like you had to have the manufacturer install it or the warranty wouldn't apply. I may still consider it, but will go to another Lowes.

What is that quote by Twain...

"It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog."

This certainly applies to your wife and you!

    Fight the good fight!!!! ;)

Please let us know how the install goes. I was thinking of putting one in for our non-functional back door, and a full door would be way too much overkill.

We had a phanton door intalled a couple years ago for our door that leads to the deck - works great. They measure and install the screen all at one - installation took less than a couple hours. Great job and well worth it!
