Did you ever try to speak to someone in charge outside of the lifeguards? Instead of getting all worked up over a teens laziness, goto the manager.

We asked yesterday who made the decision to close ALL of the pools b/c of this supposed thunder and the lifeguard said that she was specificially instructed by her supervisor that all pools should be closed immediately. Short of telling the young girl that I wanted to speak to her supervisor on the phone, there is no one I could have talked to. We did talk to what seemed to be the head lifeguard to the SW pool and she said that the message to close all the pools was never sent. One of the reasons I posted this last night is to find out who the supervisor was and to receive an explaination for what happened.

I don't think feces in the pool is a ridiculous reason.

When the lifeguards close for weather after they clear their pool they are to relay what they heard (saw, etc.)to the other pools and then they are suppose to call me and the HOA office. This way the HOA can keep track of all closings weather or otherwise and see if there are any trends that we need to wory about. This is my 6th season as the HOA liason and I have never seen seen a trend where they close at a certain time every say Friday. When there is a chance of weather moving into the area I would rather have the lifeguards call something by mistake then not to call something and someone being hurt. 95% of the time when they make a call there is a storm in the immediate area and the other 5% there is noramlly a storm close by. As for what happened this past Sunday, I do not know. I never recieved a phone call or any info about a closing. Shutting down for weather does not allow the lifeguards to go home early they are still required to be there until regular closing time unless they have permission from me to do otherwise and I normally do not give that out.
Turtle I am not sure who you talked to but I will look into this and will give you any additional info that I find out.

As for the slide and the diving board no one of any age should be hanging out at the bottom of it. At the same time anyone who has not passed the deep water test should not be allowed to be using this equipment. So young children may be questioned by the lifeguard of their swimming ablity before being allowed to to use it.

You do all realize we have a pool committee? Maybe you should take your complaints to them instead of arguing about it here. Don't get me wrong, I understand your frustrations, I too have a young one who was disappointed the other day when the pools closed due to the phone lines being down, but hashing it out on the forum is not the place. Go to the HOA meetings and make your concerns known there. I also don't appreciate the comment about the "lazy lifeguards". Many of our children work as lifeguards at the pool, and my son is one of them. For many of them, mine included, this is their first job.

I had the (dis)pleasure of running Hurricane Reef [at Kings Dominion] from time to time. When there is thunder, lightning can strike from miles. You have to close the pool to be safe.

That said, you should be able to get answers from the staff. If you don't likethe way the pool is managed, join the committee, I am sure it is open to all.

Agreed. I *don't* have a kid working as a lifeguard, but please remember that these are community-wide forums. That includes teenagers and their parents.

I would like to say, for the most part, all of the lifeguards have shown an exceptional amount of professionalism dealing with issues at all the pools. I don't think they get enough repsect from niether their peers or some adults around here.

Aswell, I don't have any children or personally know the guards.

    Staci -

Would you mind providing an update on the status of the fountains at Summerbrooke? I know there were issues at the beginning of the season, but we've been there three times in the last two weeks, and they still don't seem to be working properly. The first time only the large fountain system was on (not the zero entry ones), the second time nothing was on, and the third time only the ones by the zero entry were on, and were only put on after a mother requested it (around 4 PM). I'm just curious as to whether you are experiencing ongoing maintenance issues, or whether the guards won't put them on unless requested by several parents. I hate to bother the guards if there are issues out of their control, but I've also heard the "I'll put them on when I go on break" response.

Thanks for all of your work with these pool related issues - looks like it will be a long season for you!

I don't know of any specific fountain issues that are occuring right now. I do know that when there is any kind of a breeze at Summerbrooke pool the large fountain tends to blow water onto people that are not in the pool including the guards in the chair by the fountain. When this is occurring, they will sometimes turn them off so the wind does not obstruct their view other wise it is like watching the pool during a rain storm. As for the beach entry fountains I do know we have had several issues with them in the past but I personally have not had any reported to me this year. I will see what I can find out and let you know. In the future if a guard is not in the chair it never hurts to ask and I am always interested to hear their responses as residents sometimes learn something no one has told me yet.
