From Broad Run BOS January 2015 Newsletter:

Oppose the Proposed Greenway Toll Increase – Action Needed
The Greenway has filed yet another application with the State Corporation Commission (SCC) to increase regular tolls by 10 cents and peak tolls by 15 cents. As I have mentioned in previous newsletters, the Greenway is currently the subject of litigation before the SCC on whether their unreasonably high tolls are ‘materially discouraging’ traffic, in violation of state code. Loudoun County is party to this litigation and has been working to make the case before the SCC.

At our January 21st Business Meeting, the Board voiced its continued support of efforts by our delegates in Richmond to stop further toll increases and make the toll schedule more reasonable. Delegate David Ramadan currently has a bill that seeks to change the Greenway toll schedule from a flat rate to distance based pricing. In this scenario you pay for what you drive and nothing more. Senator Jennifer Wexton has also filed legislation to mitigate consumer costs. Senator Wexton filed a resolution on the floor of the Virginia Senate that calls for a study to explore the possibility of the Commonwealth of Virginia purchasing the Greenway from its current owner. This purchase would allow the state to set the toll costs to not be overly burdensome. Delegate Randy Minchew has filed a similar bill in the House that would amend the budget to purchase the Greenway. If the state owned the road, toll prices could be set more fairly. I strongly support both bills and any other legislation that has the potential to lower tolls on the Greenway.

The SCC is accepting public comment on this proposed increase until February 6th. I would encourage you to file your comments online and let the SCC know that the Greenway should not be seeking to raise tolls over their current toll rates.
