Isn't he too close to the school? Or is that not a law in va yet? [Edit] saw a article saying 500ft. From google maps that puts him hitting the playground of hillside at 500ft. Dunno if that counts.

From the FAQ on the registry site:

Are there any restrictions that an offender cannot live near a school or day care facility?

Effective July 1, 2006, and thereafter, a law passed that prohibited offenders from residing within 500 feet of a school or day care facility; however, if the offender resided at that residence prior to July 1, 2006, the offender can remain at that residence. If that offender moves from that location, he/she cannot move back to that residence.

Yeah, he is listed as current owner as of Jan 1 this year. This is the type of law that should not be grandfathered.

FYI - there is also a registered sex offender working at the Original Steakhouse. He doesn't live in Broadlands, however. I got that info off the same website but can't remember his name offhand.

that's ridiculous that they aren't required to move! I can see if a school/daycare was BUILT near where an offender already lived, but this clause puts the sex offenders rights before those of over 800 children at the school! UNBELIEVEABLE. you can bet my son will see this guy's picture and be well aware that he should tell us if he sees this guy anywhere near the school grounds...

I wonder if his neighbors directly near him know and if anyone has even met him (not the steakhouse guy but the broadlands resident).

Also I have not seen that guy in the steakhouse - wonder if he works in the kitchen.

Yes, we are all VERY well aware of his presence. The information was past around between most neighbors over the past few weeks. The folks on our street hang out together and we're all good friends, so when this information was discovered over a month ago, the information was immediately disseminated to everyone. Our kids have also been made aware of the situation.

Unfortuneatly, there's nothing we can do but live with this situation. We make sure that there is constant supervision when our kids are outside, often provided by multiple parents.

Just curious, do you have any interaction with him? I don't know how I would act in that situation. I would find it VERY difficult to be friendly or even cordial with him.

    Southernwalkres,

For obvious reasons, I would not want to discuss this publicly here. Feel free to send me a Private Message via the forums if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

Dunno when he moved in, but aren't they required to go around door to door and say howdy-ho whenever they move? Or is that an old wive's tale.

Just wanted to let you know that I have been in touch with the Va State Police as well as our local sheriffs office about this. Apparently there are only certain violations that require a sex offender to live outside of the 500 ft distance from a school. He will be getting back to me if this individual violates this 500 ft rule. Also, the individual listed in Brambleton has an incorrect address listed and this is being looked into. I also asked about how the police go about notifying the schools and local daycares...they don't...it is the responsibility of the schools and daycares to ask the state police to have them placed on an email notification distribution list to be informed when a sex offender moves into the area. Once I hear back I will let you know.

This individual does not violate the 500 foot rule based on the time of his conviction. As has been pointed out, the law changed July 1. Current law only stipulates that he does not "loiter within 100 feet of a school."

That doesn't make him any less dangerous due to a stupid technicality. He obviously didn't do much jail time either. It's time for VA to model their plan after South Carolina's which in effect makes them move out of SC. Felons of this nature deserve nothing.

Thanks to jamemkelly for posting this information and Donna for following up with the police.

This is a community issue and not just one for his immediate neighbors. We have public pools, playgrounds, paths, etc. where he is free to go. And kids who do not live on his street may still ride their bikes in the area or simply be playing in the vicinity. Everyone should look at the link and become familiar with his face whether you have children or not.

In regards to the Steakhouse employee, does anybody actually know what he officially did?
