:scaredeyes:So, we have a new fridge arriving and are trying to take the old cabinet above the fridge down. We have taken out all the screws we see and the damn thing is still on the wall and not moving...any ideas?

Maybe the paint is holding it in place kind of like a old wood frame window that's painted shut. Did you try to cut around the edges with a razor perhaps?

cabinets are also usually screwed into their neighbors at the face frame (ie not just the wall behind the cabinet)... did you check those?

ANd we have found sometimes when cabinets know they have a good home they just don't want to leave. :devil2: So perhaps if you are gentle and kind to the cabinet and promise it a good home it will come down very easily. It is worth a shot:happygrin:

I know sharse promised her old ref when she sold it to me that it was going to a good home and the ref came to my garage easily and I even put in color coordinated outdoor carpeting throughout my garage for the ref. and it is so happy and so are the cars.:happygrin: Although it does miss sharse and especially norm. It would be nice if they came over once in awhile just to know they still love their old refridge.

boomer - yeah, we took those out and still no dice. I'm a littl afraid to do much more as I have a nasty habit of taking what should be a very simple project and turing it into a nightmare.

I did, however, speak very sternly to the cabinet last night and said it was being a beastly thing and should hop down right now!

    Fool thing didn't respond.

maybe they put construction adhesive on the back :( Should only be screwed side to side if adjoining cabinets, and on the back (check both inside and outside the cabinet). If not, I bet they goo'd it :(

Also take a look on the top of the cabinet and see if the installers screwed them from above.

Most times cabinets are hung from an existing board that is screwed to the studs. The board share an angle cut. Have you tried tapping up from the bottom near the wall?

We removed a total of 4 visible screws: 1 inside the cabinet, one from the top and two from the attached cabinet. Brassy & I then grabbed the thing and gave it a few firm tugs. Nothing. I do not want to do more as we just had the walls painted and I can just see us yanking a few square yards of the drywall paper covering off along with the paint.

Now, this being held in place by just two screws is scary becuase when I installed the cabinets in the bar I had to install wood 2x4s on the HVAC side of the drywall and each cabinet took 4 screws to secure it.

When you look at the back panel inside the cabinet, do you see any spot where it doesn't connect completely with the sides? If so, your cabinet may have had a hole in the back panel and another piece was glued onto the inside of the cabinet to hide the hole. My builder had to do this on the bottom panel of my sink cabinet because they didn't attach the water lines correctly.

You say you removed 4 visible screws, is there something that looks like a "toggle bolt"? I have seen these used to connect the base cabinets, but wouldn't be suprised if you have something like that on you cabinets. Also, is there any "give" to the cabinets when you tried to move them or are they still completely secure?

Nope - no toggle bolts. And, yes, they are soldi. The interior seems to be completely assembled.

Maybe it's the drywall paper or paint holding it? Have you tried going around it with a utility knife? BTW, you ar much more patient than me, I would have cut it into pieces by now... :)

Brassy clubbed it with a rubber mallet - still no budging. So, we are going to have the guy who is installing hte new cabinet remove the old one.

I refuse to believe that it's staying up there by magic.

OK, ready? The cabinet was glued up due to the fact that the wall studs are 26" apart - not 24".

Well now, ain't that the work of a good carpenter. I don't know what's worse the framing carpenter, or the kitchen cabinet install carpenter.

In the end I am glad to hear you have it down. I still would have used power tools.
