I am getting some of my buddies back together for some pick-up Roller Hockey so I am looking for others interested in joining. No formal experience necessary and if you do not have all the equipment, let me know I am sure we have some extra... and women are welcome! There is a rink on Claiborne right at the W&OD trail bridge just past the high school.

We want to try this Sunday so let me know. And hopefully once a week or so if we can get organized.

I think this is a wonderful idea! I'm trying to get my husband to join you. What time on Sunday are you thinking?

Is there an age limit to one that might be interested in playing?

boomer - aka Graeme, is that you? I forgot to check if you were the same person...

And no age limit - just gotta be able to move. Actually, if you want to play goalie then you do not even have to move... much. We have not settled on a time, thinking 3:00 if that could work.

and tiff78, if you could PM me your husbands e-mail address, we have a hockey distribution list that I can include him in so he can stay informed about games etc. And if 78 is the graduation date, then he should fit right in! The bigger the beer gut, the harder we have to work!

I am all for this. I'll be out of town this weekend though. That'll give me time to get a decent pair of skates and find some equipment. Does having hockey experience hurt? I played for the ice in western NY.

that is funny... thanks tiff. And did he tell you all the years we played together and the exciting "Pickuphockey.net" web site that was created! Those were the days...

Phitnessfiend - always could use another body. No experience necessary since this is for fun and exercise. I could use another target... I mean left wing. The rink is at Trailside Park just past the Stone Bridge HS on the left. Let me know if anyone is unsure of where that is located. And 3:00 pm this Sunday is the plan.

I am trying to confirm that the rink is available just in case.

And thinking that you want quick and easy access to equipment I would say that you can try Dicks Sporting goods at the Dulles Mall... I think they have everything. Shin pads are a good idea, other than the obvious things like skates and a stick. Helmet is a good idea if you are more of a beginner, but since this is for fun, there is minimal contact... usually just by accident, but it can happen. Gloves are another important item... and you can get away with street hockey gloves but I would recommend getting the something like the ones used for ice. You will just have to break them in. Some of us will bring some extra stuff.

    Dave,

Yeah I remember those days when boomer played both ice and roller hockey. He loved it, got lots of exercise. If you are able to keep the games to afternoons on a weekend (I understand that can't always happen) we can make it a family fun time with the kids too. Playing at the park and to support the game :) We used to bring our daughter to his ice hockey games, and she's gone to Canada several times to cheer for daddy!

I'm looking forward to the game on Sunday :)

luckily, with good boots, the last thing that gets hurt is the achilles. And I have a blown ACL in the right need and this is really one of the sports with the least amount of stress on it... now of course the lower back suffers big time. I have broken the same ankle twice in basketball... so no more except a good game of horse.

Plan is still the same... Trailside Park Sunday 3:00 pm. We need to rink to dry off by then but I think we are good to go.

For equipment the closest places are Ashburn Ice House and Pro-Fit Ski and Skate in Leesburg. My youngest son played in the Ashburn Inline Hockey League for many seasons and we got most of our equipment at Pro-Fit.

I remember my back and ankles hurting a lot when I starting off playing, but it hasn't hurt since.... So if you're just starting out, don't worry, your back and ankles will get stronger =)

Man, if only there was a website where you could coordinate a pickup hockey game.... ;)

Hi Dave, JoeA from the old team at FFX Sportsplex. Haven't played roller in a while but would love to lace 'em up and go out there with you guys. I've gotta finish up my taxes and seed/soil the yard beforehand, but it would be cool to see a bunch of the Techmatics gang and meet some new hockey players.

As for equipment, if you wanna get the good stuff, try the above suggestions and go to Pro-Fit, Dick's or Ashburn Icehouse. But if you're unsure how long you're gonna play, you may want to visit Play it Again Sports if they're still around, or http://washingtondc.craigslist.com .

    See ya,
    Joe
