Starbucks marketing strategy is extremely aggressive. They will open up stores that put their own stores out of business just to make sure they keep out any competition. They want to make sure that any plaza with a coffee shop will have a Starbucks coffee shop and no one else.

They want to monopolize coffee the way Loudoun Hospital wants to monopolize hospital care in Loudoun County.:) (Sorry, Tech Head, just had to throw that in there!! I promise I won't do it again!)

VaCliff: I'm glad to hear about the Starbucks. I'll be in line on Nov 6!!! Also, I agree that we should keep this thread this thread upbeat. (KillerBee: Sorry to drag you out of our mutually-agreed hospital silence.)

I think that we all can agree that Starbucks is good for the Broadlands. Now for the most important question, will there be a drive-through? VaCliff, you said that it will be in a corner store, so a drive-through should be possible. Any info?

Forget the drive thru, we need a brew thru.

If Starbucks would have bought the unit next to it before Hershey's moved in and made it a decent size they wouldn't need a second store. I don't think they realized how popular it was going to be.

Worked out well for me, though. I live across the street from it!

I've lived in Ashburn since 1988, starting out in Ashburn Farm and now living in Broadlands. I don't know about everyone else, but I'm sick of every shopping center that opens in this area has the same stores! Example: Subway -there's a Subway in Ashburn Village and one in Ashburn Farm, and now another one is opening in Broadlands! Why not get something different? Like Quiznos? Don't get me wrong - Subway is a lot healthier than McDonald's, but why three? It's ridiculous! Just my two cents worth!

I have an idea, when all this HCA mess is over we all go to the new starbucks and have a friendly, neighborly coffee and chat about the weather.

I concur with the Quiznos thought. My husband would be in dream land.

For lack of a better term, the stores are "cheesey." Mattress Discounters and a Hair Cuttery in same center. Not to sound like a snob or anything, but I can get that kind of service in Prince William County. And an Asia Cafe, Vietnamese, and sushi shop all in the same center seems a bit duplicative. Where are the Paneras, Cosis, and book stores?

Yes, a book store -- we need a Barnes & Noble. Also, I would love to see a Chipotle move in. Great burritos!

If you want certain stores, then you need to make it known to them that you want them here. Saul will rent out to whoever comes along, so if Subway wants in, they get in. Don't think for a minute that they don't know they are saturating the marketplace. Just as Starbucks doesn't want Dunkin Donuts in, Subway wants to ensure Quiznos, Jerry's, etc. can't get in.
A neighbor of mine was looking into getting a Quiznos franchise, but the deal was so bad with the company that he decided against it.
Stephanie- I don't think there can be a drive through because the entire storefront area is under cover and a sidewalk.

The term "planned community" doesn't really mean much. If it were "planned", the same stores wouldn't show up in all the different shopping centers! It all boils down to $$$, and they don't care anything about variety at all. At least we're getting a Safeway and not another Giant!!

Any news on the restaurant pad sites? I think that is our only hope for a decent sit-down, family restaurant. I realize it's probably going to be a franchise though. Also vacliff, you had mentioned earlier in this thread that they were going to start phase II construction immediately. Any news on stores going in there?

    Tech Head-
Haven't heard anything. I heard about the plan to start Phase 2 immediately from a Terrabrook employee who sells their commercial property. He didn't have any additional information.

I heard from a manager at a "nearby" Safeway that the Broadlands Safeway is 'scheduled' to open October 10!!!!

According to the sign on Claiborne Pky, the first phase is 98% leased, so what are the stores, since the website doesn't show all the spaces leased.

My Neighbor walked over there this weekend and saw a "Starbucks coming soon" sign on one of the corner lots. I wouldn't be surprised if the center did a soft opening before the November hard target date.

I drove past the Safeway last night. They had the shelving up, the aisles signs up, freezers up and working, and boxes that might have been the cash register lanes. Looking really great inside.

I rode my bike along the storefronts today. The following have their names posted:
Hair Salon, Barber, Starbucks, Cards & Gifts, Women's fitness, Viet restaurant, Asia Cafe, Weichert Realty.

I think there are way too many "same cuisine" restuarants in the Ashburn area. It's kind of overkill! But - too late now. I still can't believe that Mattress Discounters will be over there...that type of business belongs along Rt. 7. Wish we would get another drugstore!! CVS is so overloaded...I stood in line the other day for over 30 minutes to pick up a prescription!! Maybe some day!

A 24 hour pharmacy would be nice. Though I never thought I would say it, but I am glad Blockbuster is there. The video place up the street is $4 for 2 day rental. Unreal!

I'm just glad that the shopping center is nearing completion! We've been hearing about it forever, so it will be good to start shopping there.

Also, I don't foresee that Mattress Discounters will do a good business here, so let's all agree not to shop there. OK? Then, we can get a new store there in a year!
