The Cub Scouts will be collecting food for the hungry in Loudoun County tomorrow, Saturday 11/12, beginning at 9 am. If you got a bag on your door please set your donations out by 9am! Thanks from the Scouts,

    Audrey

    Hi Audrey,

We didn't get a bag on our door this year. Will you be accepting donations in the community this year (i.e. at the Safeway?).

    Thanks!

If you set your donations out in any grocery bag, and email me your address (at ads4broadlands@yahoo.com since my HOA email address isn't working) - I'll make sure it gets collected.

Or if you want to drop them off the scouts will be taking all their donations to Hillside Elementary - you could drop them off there between 9 and 12 this morning.

Thanks Audrey! I appreciate it. Yesterday was crazy, and I didn't get a chance to make it to the store on Sat. morning either. Do you know if they will extend it to any other time?

Thanks for asking! The Cub Scouts are done after working two full mornings this weekend and last - the sea of bags I saw at Hillside was a tremendous showing of the generosity of Broadlands! Those contributions will help a lot of hungry people in our area.

There are still lots of chances to help. Here's an article put out by Loudoun County earlier this month with many suggestions:

    Holiday Coalition Needs Thanksgiving Assistance

With the opening of the Thanksgiving store less than two weeks away, and with more than 800 families already requesting assistance, the Community Holiday Coalition needs the help of the Loudoun community to provide Thanksgiving food baskets, personal/household baskets and warm winter coats for those in need of help.

"Loudoun County has always been generous in sharing with others during the holiday season, and once again we seek your help," said Karen Velez, Holiday Coalition Coordinator. "We expect to provide food for Thanksgiving dinner for more than 800 families this year; during the December holidays this number will be even higher. We look for traditional holiday food: stuffing, yams, vegetables, potatoes, pumpkin pie filling and crust mix, boxed hot roll mix and other non-perishable foods. We do not have refrigeration, so we prefer grocery store gift cards to be used for the turkey and other perishables."

"One of the big ways everyone can help out is to fill the plastic bags the Boy Scouts will drop off at your door on November 5 & 6 and leave it filled with non-perishable food and on your doorstep by 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 12, for the Boy Scouts to pick up,” continued Velez.

In addition to food, the Holiday Coalition will be collecting and distributing gently used, clean winter coats during the Thanksgiving distribution. Coats are needed in all sizes from infant through adult, but coats are especially needed for children and teens. New gloves, hats and mittens will be distributed in December. The Coalition will also be collecting laundry baskets filled with household cleaning, paper & personal care items at the Thanksgiving program.

Donations can be dropped off at many of the Holiday Collection sites throughout the county. Many local businesses have teamed up with the Holiday Coalition and will be accepting donations during normal business hours.
