Can anyone tell me what a normal price is for security systems. Something that covers 4 entrances and maybe two motion detectors? Brinks quotes us like $700 and that seemed really high to me. Considering they are charging $150 per motion detector.

I don't think I'd have the lowest bidder do my security system, they might have other ways to make money <g>

May want to call the non emergency police number and ask someone there what company they suggest. I'm sure the police has experience with all the companies that service our area. Maybe ask a police officer at the Mall.

Did you get any responses to this? I also am researching this topic and have contact Brinks/ADT but was wondering if there was any other options.

    Lisa:

It really comes down to programming preferences, service contract length, and monthly service rate verses what you are willing to spend on a monthly basis. The hardware all comes from the same distributor. ADT does enough business to place an ADT sticker on their controllers. The centeral station that monitors your alarm basically all work the same. You may want to explore the options between ADT, Brink, and others to find your best deal and how long of a service contract that will be required.

I have ADT and had no problems with those folks. Asking the "police" is an option but I doubt they will provide you with a vendor to go through. They are reluctant to name vendors, so that they do not show preferences.

Best of luck in your search

I think it is alot cheaper to pay for a system yourself and then get monitoring... I've seen monitoring service for ~$9/month at places like http://www.nextalarm.com/

Paying $30+/month for "monitoring" is a ripoff.

I had a security company wire up my house at no charge, and a
two-year monitoring contract at $25 a month. They did three doors,
three basement windows, two wired motion detectors, one wireless
motion detector, one wired controller, and one wireless controller.

They were bought out by ADT, and when the two years were up I switched
to SecureNet for the same price. SecureNet came in and repaired a
problem I had with an intermittant detector and installed some
additional equipment. So far I've been very happy with them.
